(iP) Another alumnus has been
added to the r o s t e r of former
"Fightin' Irish" who for decades
have been directing the football
fortunes beneath Notre Dame's
golden dome.
He is John Hugh Devore, Irish
line coach for the past two years
and Notre's Dame's third head
football coach and athletic di
rector in as many seasons.
Devore, football co-captain at
Notre Dame in 1933, and an
Irish end three years, yesterday
was appointed acting athletic di
rector to succeed Ed McKeever,
who resigned last week to be
come head coach at Cornell. De
vore's appointment, announced
by the Rev. J. Hugh O'Donnell,
CSC, Notre Dame president, is
effective only until the return
of Lit. Frank Leahy, former ath
letic director who resigned a
year ago to enter the navy.
Bagby May Not Play
With Indians In '45
ATLANTA, March 7 VP) Jim
Bagby Jr., elognated right hand
er of the Cleveland Indians, has
signed his 1945 contract, he said
today, adding, however, it did
not necessarily mean he would
play with the Indians.
"I intend to wait and see what
is the government's attitude
toward baseball before reporting
for spring trailing," he ex
plained. "I might stay, right

(IP) Young Vince Boryla staged
a record-smashing performance
in his final basketball game for
Notre Dame last night, leading
the Irish to an 87 to 43 win over
the University of Detroit.
Before the season's final game,
Boryla, who will be inducted
into the navy on Friday,, was
elected honorary captain for
1944-45 and then went out and
broke three all-time Irish scor
ing records. He scored 31 points
lor a new marK lor a single
game and a new record for the
Irish fieldhousc. His season
total of 322 points for 20 games
bettered Leo Klier's record of

Big Gale Bishop continued his
sensational basketball scoring
for the Fort Lewis (Wash.) War
riors last week, boosting his sea
son total to 1049 points as -he
won the individual high scoring
championship among the nation's
service quintets.
Bishop, former Washington
State star, flipped 125 points
through the hoop in his last six
games for a three-week splurge
of 348 points. Altogether he had
creased the nets for 440 field
goals and 169 free throws in 45
games. ,
Technically he is through for
the season, but because of his
drawing power Fort Lewis offi
cials may arrange several more
games. .
Far behind in second place is
Don Barksdale, of Camp Ross
(Calif.), with 749 points. Bob
Kinney, of Camp Bradford (Va.)
is third with 615 and Sam Pat
ton of Camp Patrick Henry
fourth with 600. Ermer Robin
son of the Fort Warren (Wyo.)
quintet rounds out the first five

maining four quintets were ex
pected to be selected within the
next two days.
