MILITARY NEED
FOR NURSES
WASHINGTON, Feb. 28 VP)
Confronted with figures showing
almost 600,000 army and navy
personnel in hospitals, the house
leadership moved today to ex
pedite legislation to draft nurses
to care for them.
Tentative plans call for final
house action Friday on a mea
sure to subject to induction all
unmarried nurses not under 20
or over 44 years of age.
Already approved by the mili
tary committee, the legislation
won rules committee sanction
after the army disclosed that bat
tle casualties are filling hospi
tals at a rate of 1600 daily and
are "steadily mounting."
In addition, army officials
said In a report to the rules
body, some 6500 men become ill
or suffer non-battle injuries
every day.
Sick and wounded are being
returned to the United States for
hospitalization at a rate of more
than 1000 a day. As a result, the
report said, army hospitals in
this country had a population of
210,000 this week. In addition,
280,000 army personnel were
hospitalized outside the United
States. The navy estimated its
February hospital population at
82,000.

SEWING GROUP
The seventh meeting of the
Red, White and Blue Sewing
group met Fxiday, Feb. 16, at
Shasta school.
A party was held, and the re
freshments were ice cream and
cookies.
The attendance was 24, as the
leader for the guest group was
unable to attend.
We all had a very good time.

rne 4-H Camp Cookery club
No. 4 at Shasta school is now
well organized with 12 lively
members, all boys.-
Originally there were 16 boys
but some have moved or drop
ped the project, so it has been
necessary to re-eleet officers.
The boys almost unanimously
voted to be hereafter known as
"The Bonfire-and-Biscuits club."
To date six dishes have been
prepared by the members who
soon will begin planning full
camp meals.

hopes to send in one weekly re
port from now on.

volcanic eruptions has been
known to remain in suspension
in the air for several years.
First Accident In
29 Years Reported
J. B. Reed, after 29 years
of careful and extensive driv
ing, was Involved in his first
automobile accident February
21.
Mr. and Mrs. Reed of 535
Jefferson were returning
home from Empire when
Reed's car was struck by a
truck on a curve in the road
near Dillard. No one was in
jured, but Reed's car suffered
slight damages.
The Reeds were returning
from a five-week vacation and
fishing trip when the accident
occurred. Reed stayed on in
Roseburg a week to attend to
repairs, returning Tuesday.
Mrs. Reed had come home on
the bus immediately after the
accident.

Chamber of commerce person
nel again urge residents with
rentals available to list them.
Furnished apartments and
houses are most of all in demand
but sleeping rooms, extra beds
and couches are desirable and ur
gently needed to take care of
the daily influx of newcomers
to this city.
According to chamber of com
merce clerks, an average of 40
persons inquire at the office
daily for living accommodations.
An average of fewer than two a
day are placed under the present
setuD. thev sav.
Transients are mostly service
men's wives and families who
stay usually from three to six
months.
Citizens of this community are
urgently requested by the cham
ber of commerce to come for
ward and help in this emergency
by opening their homes to these
people, eacn ot wnom is a poten
tial postwar resident.

Protect Nisei

The Multnomah county bar as
sociation has appointed a com
mittee of five to protect the in
terests of Japanese-American
citizens Whose constitutional
rights may be threatened by war
hysteria.
The action was taken at a
meeting last night at which
Oscar Furuset was elected presi
dent. Others chosen were James
Landye, first vice president;
Hugh L. Biggs, second vice pres
ident; Robert O. Boyd, third vice
president: Harvey S. Benson.

Ship to Be Named For
Willamette University
WASHINGTON. Feb. 28 (VP)
A ship now under construction
at Oregon Shipbuilding coroora-
tion, Portland, will be named for
Willamette university, Salem,
Ore.
Senator Cordon (R-Ore.) said
last night the ship will be
launched about April 4.

gon's 1944 forest fire losses, the
lightest in many years, totaled
$243,065, State Forester N. S.
Rogers said today.
There were 843 fires that
burned 17,804 acres of forest and
brush fires. The loss figure in
cludes damage to timber, logs,
logging equipment, and other
property.
Lightning caused 380 fires,
smokers 149, brush burning 79,
campers 65, logging 55. incendi
ary 46, and railroads 32.
