Jan Garber, who brings his
orchestra to ' the Armory Wed
nesday night was one of the first
of the showman-leaders, and is
still noted for his clowning with
the customers. :

The army assured congress today
that it has not and will not name
as officers "any individuals who
seek the overthrow of the Unit
ed States government "
This statement came from
Assistant Secretary of War John
J. McCloy in testimony before
a house military subcommittee
investigating reports that com
munists are eligible for army
commissions.
McCloy emphasized that "the
basic consideration (is)" , , .
The individual's loyalty to the
United States, a loyalty to be
measured not in terms of al
legiance to any ono alien belief,
such as communism, but in terms
of all beliefs that might super
cede his devotion to America."
"This policy has the broadest
possible base, he said. "It is
not limited to any one class of
subversive or disloyal persons,
but applies to all persons who
advocate, or fellow travellers
with those who advocate, the
overthrow of our constitutional
form of government.
"The army has not knowing
ly appointed as officers any in
dividuals who seek overthrow
of the government, or whose dis
loyalty has been otherwise estab
lished, and it does not propose to
do so."

snatchers who were scheduled to
appear in juvenile court before
Circuit Judge David R. Vanden
berg Monday, were advised that
their cases would continue, one
until March 3, the other until
March 10.
