will be elected are Ben Pickett,
Louis Kalina, Laddie Rajnus,

Blohm. A. Kalina, Clyde Van
Meter, Joe Halousek. Emil Tofell,
Harry Jackman and W. C. Dal
ton. Featured on the program will

State Entomologist
To Resign Position
PULLMAN, Feb. ,23 (&)
Laurel G. Smith, stato extension
entomologist since March 1938,
disclosed today he .was resigning
at the end of this month to ac
cept a newly created post of
technological supervisor of en
tomological and agricultural
problems for the Shell Oil com
pany. Smith will have his head
quarters in San Francisco and
will direct the work in Wash
ington, Oregon and California.;-
Woman's Body Found
In Creek Near Home
WALDPORT, Feb. 23- (fly
Police today investigated the
death of Mrs. Jeanette Ridge
man, 48, road contractor's wife
whose body was found in a
creek near her home 14 miles
south of here.
The body, dressed only in un
derclothing and a coat, was
brought here yesterday after it
was found in three feet of water.
Mrs. Ridgeman apparently fell
in the stream after her husband
left for work, neighbors said.

Treaty Approved
WASHINGTON. Feb. 23 UP)
The senate foreign relations com
mittee voted today to senfl me
United States -Mexico water
treaty to the floor with a recom
mendation that it bo ratified.
Terms of the treaty provide
for a division of waters of the
Colorado river and the Rio
Grande, and authorize tho gov
ernments of the two countries
to work out a plan for the de
velopment of the Tijuana river
In California.
Omiosition has snruna mainly
from Califomians, who contend
it gives to Mexico waters or the
Colorado on which they count
for future development of their
state.
173 Portlanders
Arrested In Drive

Pedestrians are still stepping

the police safety drive totaled
173 today.
Arrests started Wednesday
with 39 persons cited the first
24 hours, but tho dally tally
rose to 68 the second day and

Burned Match Thief
Steals Jewelry
PORTLAND. Feb. 23 (if) Po
lice tried again today to track
down Portland's "burned match"
burglar, active in several recent
thefts.
Edward J. Blyth reported jew
clry valued at $1383 was stolen
when his home was entered the
other night. As in the previous
cases, a trail of burned matches
led through the rooms.
Stallard Receives
Posthumous Award
Mrs. Lorenzo Stallard, 4782
S. 6th, Wednesday received the
Purple Heart awarded her hus
band, Pvt. Lorenzo Stallard,
killed in action in Belgium, De
cember 26.
The war department advised
Mrs. Stallard that she was en
titled to wear the small purple
bar included with the Purple
Heart.
Juveniles to Be
Heard Monday
Two juveniles, 14 and 15-year-old
boys involved in three
purse snatching episodes last
week, will be brought before
Circuit Judge David R. Vanden
berg for a juvenile hearing Mon
day at 2 p. m., it was an
nounced by County Juvenile Of
ficer Harold Hendrickson.
The pair is being held at the
juvenile cottage at this time,
Hendrickson said.
FAT PROPELLANT
Waste fats from the kitchens
of American housewives has
found a wartime use as an in
gredient in the propcllant used
to fire American rockets. The
waste fats are used in the mak
ing of nitroglycerine which con
stitutes 50 per cent of the pro
pellant. Scientists say some ' earth
quakes occur as far down as 1000
miles below the earth's surface.

announced purchase of 42 acres
of farm land on the Tulelake
highway norlhwcst of town. The
land was owned by Mrs. M. S.
Tate, who has not made her
home hero for some time. The
property has been occupied by
a Mr. and Mrs. Gucrrin.
