WASHINGTON, Jan. 17 (I')
The probability developed today
that Hep, Jackson (U-Wash.) will
become chninnun of tho house
Indian affairs committee. . :
Jackson would succeed Rep.
O'Connor (D-Morit.) who d i o d
Monday. Ahead of him in rnnk
on tho committee aro Itcp.s. Mur
doek (IJ-Ariz.), Just appointed
chairman of the public lands
committee; White, new chairman
of the coinuKc committee, and
DJckKtcIn (D-N.Y.), immigration
committee chairman.
If Jackeon is named chairman,
his advancement lo a key posi
tion probably would have been
accomplished in the shortest
lime on record, Ho was assiancd
to the committee only last year
and he in one of the youngest
members of the house.
Jackson has taken a keen in
terest in Indian affairs, not only
because of the relatively large
number of Indians in his state
but because of Washington
State's interest in the Alaskan
Indian problems.
