PORTLAND. Dec. 22
Widespread mislabeling of milk
in violation of state regulations
has been disclosed in Oregon
towns surveyed by the sanitary
engineering division of the state
Board of health.
Distributors in Hood River,
La Grande, Princville and Rose
burg have been endangering
public health by purchasing raw
milk from other dairies and sell
ing it under their own label, re
ported V. C. Morban, state san
itarian. This would hinder trac
ing of epidemics to the source,
he said.
Pasteurizing plants In Hood
River, where only raw milk was
sold up to a year ago, arc on "an
extremely low level of sanita
tion," Morgan stated. The pas
teurized milk rating for that
city was only 45 per cent, based
on the government standard
which makes 100 per cent "per
fect" and 90 per cent "passing."
Ratings for raw milk in other
towns gave Roseburg 84 per cent,
Salem 74 per cent and La Grando
72 per cent. Pasteurized milk
ratings were: Roseburg 72.8 per
cent, Salem 71 per cent, and
La Grande 49 per cent.
Morgan said results of tests
in Marshfield, Bend, Madras,
Redmond and Prineville will be
announced by January 1.

first Red Cross parcels sent by
way of Siberia to American
prisoners in Japan and Man
churia are being distributed.
The broadcast said the next
shipment would go to prisoners

SALEM, Dec. 22 (IP) A log
ging camp custom of calling
the boss "the governor" caused
a Montana man 100 miles ot
travel yesterday to see Gov
ernor Earl Snell.
The man applied for a job at
a logging operation near Cot
tage Grove, and was told to
"see th' governor."
So he came to see Governor
Snell, who telephoned the log
ging contractor and straight
ened things out.

Medal and one Oak Leaf cluster,
awarded his son, 2nd Lt; James
E Barlow, U. S. army air corps,
now a prisoner of war in Ger
many. The presentation took place
December 8, in a private cere
mony conducted by Capt. Otha
M. Smith, commanding officer.

Potato sorting in the Klamath
basin will be at a standstill until
the first of the year with the ex
ception of a few crews which
will continue to operate, accord
ing to a report received Friday
from Clyde James, farm labor
assistant in Klamath county.
This is largely due to a short
age in potato cars, as plenty of
help is available for sorter work
through the farm labor employ,
ment office, James said.
Contract sorters and growers
have decided to hold up work
until the first of the year In the
hope that more cars can be re
leased for spud shipments at
that time.
