Joan Berry Testifies Her
Child Fathered by Chaplin

A worried-looking, attractive
girl of 24, who twists her hands

chair, has testified that Charlie
Chaplin fathered her baby but

Auburn-haired Joan Berry,
who faces a Jury again today In

KELSO, Wash., Dec. 21 (IP)
Sheriff's officers said today the
crew of a navy bomber from the
naval air station, Seattle, es
caped . without injury when
forced to land in a cornfield near
Costle Rock Wednesday at 4:42
p. m. Officers said the plane be
came lost in the fog and clouds
and ran short of fuel.
It circled the field for 14 min
utes before landing. The plane
suffered only slight damage but
probably will have to be disman
tled before it can be removed
from the field.
Sheriff's officers expressed
admiration at the pilot's skill in
landing the plane in the small
field and in keeping .it from
cracking up on the muddy
ground.
Coast Fuel Company
To Use Patents For
Coal By-Products
COOS BAY, Dec. 21 (P) The
American Lurgl corporation has
granted the Coast Fuel corpora
tion permission to use six of its
patents for coal by-products, T.
O. Toon, Coast Fuel president,
sold today.
The company, which owns the
first machine-operated coal mine
in this area, plans to build a fac
tory where the processes will be
used.

Tho complaining witness ex
plained to the police magis
trate that, when he asked for
change for a half-dollar so he
could get stamps from a vend
ing machine in the drug
store, the druggist became
miffed, twisted his arm, push
ed him out the door and
knocked him to the sidewalk.
The patron's wristwatch
was broken.
The druggist was fined $10
and lectured on business
methods.

The federal communications
commission has dismissed Dor
ma Schacffer's application for a
new standard radio station at
Klamath Falls, Ore.
FCC officials said the action
was taken after Schaeffcr failed
to reply to correspondence re
garding the application, filed
last spring.

According to figures released
recently by the public utilities
commission or. Oregon lor 1V4Z-

companies, tne only two rail
roads operating solely In Klam
ath county had an increase in

These railways arc the Ore
gon. California and Eastern
Railway company and tho Klam
ath Northern Railway company.
The former line operates from
Klamath Falls to Bly and is 64
miles In length. Figures show
that on this railway, total car
load traffic for 1043 was 720,887
tons .against 617,735 tons in
1042, a difference of 112,081
tons.
State taxes on the Oregon,
California line amounted to $17,
333 in 1943 compared to $23,750
for 1942, a decrease of $6417 for
1943.-
Total railway operating reve
nues for the Oregon, California
railway was $326,651 in 1943 in
comparison with $329,482 for
1942. These figures show a de
crease of $2831 for 1943 in com
parison with the 1942 statistics.
The Klamath Northern line is
10 miles long and connects the
Gilchrist Timber company with
the Southern Pacific railroad at
Gilchrist junction.
Total carload traffic on this
railway for 1943 was 141,335
tons compared to 47,922 tons for

crease of 03,413 in '43.
Railway tax accruals on the
Klamath Northern railway were
$2485 for 1043 against $1792 for
an increase of 5o3 for 43.
Total railway operating reve
nues on this line were $41,152 in
1943 and $38,137 in 1942, an in
crease of $3015 for the latter
year.
Both these railways deal chief
ly with potatoes, hay, grain,
livestock and timber, with tim
ber far and away the major com
modity. For instance, on the
Klamath Northern line for 1043
the road dealt with 141,293 tons
of forest products out of a total
carload traffic of 141,335. The
Oregon, California railway dealt
with-694,461 tons of forest prod
ucts in 1943, out of a total car
load traffic of 729,887.
