Beavers Interfere With Tide Gates REEDSPORT, Dec. 20 (PI Complaint! that beavers' dams are Interfering with the closii a of tide gates along the Umnqua, Smith, and Schofield rivers, re sulting in flooded land, are be ing investigated today, Fred Sankey, state game com mission beaver control expert hero touring ranches, said many of the beavers would have to be taken from the district HAILS LOADED WITH TRAVEL pace Five Railroad travel is heavier than usual this year over the holidays, according to L. S, Stltt, district freight and pas senger agent for Southern Pacific. Most of the train snacc is taken up by military personnel plus a small amount of civilian travel, he said. There are no restrictions on railroad travel, but railroads have expressly asked the public to refrain from using the trains during the holiday season unless abso lutely necessary. This is In or der to permit members of the armed forces to spend the Christmas holidays with their families, Stltt said. The public is complying well with this appeal, although travel isciiities are still crowded. It was pointed out that thousands of service men and women arc going homa for Christmas and the. railroads must also always be ready to move wounded fighting men from ships to hospitals. No extra trains are allowed by the government to be added to facilitate the handling of the Increased travel which normally develops during the Christmus holidays, Stltt stated. Conse quently there is an extreme shortage of passenger ears as well as motive power and train crews. The ticket demand is cspc llly heavy from military per sonnel here, Stltt said. Trains are operating practically on time since most of the conges tion and delays to regular pas senger trains have been elimi nated by tho operation of the "Santa Claus special," which handles all mall, express and baggage, relieving the regular passenger trains from this local service, he said.
