ath Falls, is now recovering in

hospital in England.
Pvt. Vlers, who was awarded
the Purple Heart, is "recovering
satisfactorily and will soon re
turn to duty," said his ward sur
geon. When an 88 shell exploded
near him, Pvt. .Vlcrs was hit
with shrapnel. He was given
first aid by medical department
soldiers and taken to a dressing
station. He was evacuated to
England by boat.
His wife, Olive June, lives at
the N. 3rd address. His parents,
Mr. and Mrs. W. N. Viers live at
1133 Walnut. Pvt. Viers was
a welder for the United Engi
neering company, San Francisco,
before entering the army. His
brother, Victor D., Is in the navy
in the South Pacific.
Giant Onions Sent
To Governors
PORTLAND, Dec. 12 '(IP)
Under auspices of the Portland
chamber of commerce, 50-pound
sacks of giant Oregon onions will
be sent from Ontario tomorrow
to Ihe nation's governors.
At least five inches in diame
ter, the onions will bear Christ
mas greetings from this state
and, the chamber hopes, help
reduce the nation's onion sur
plus through resulting publicity.

Valley hospital from injuries re
ceived early Monday when he
allegedly ran into a car driven
by Novell A. Welman, 37, route

Welman filed a report with
city police. He said he was driv
ing Into town at about 7:40 a. m.
Monday when Brady ran Into
his car on Riverside at the Copco
shops. Brady was moved to thc
hospital where he was found to
nave a broken right leg.

that it had no objection to the
propesd packing plant sought by
Frank Lowell at Spring and
Hood, but "under no consider
ation would the board approve
a slaughter house within - the
city limits.
Last week, Lowell asked per
mission to build a plant within
the city and the matter was re
ferred to the board jvhlch re
plied that there were "no ob
jections to a properly conducted
plant within the city limits, pro
vided it complies with zoning

Sunday morning. Both vehicles
were en route to a (ire and
sirens were screaming which
prevented either driver from
hearing the other.
J. D. O'Neal, 223 Lincoln, was
driver of the prowl car, John
Mitchell, 1039 Washington, oper
ator of the truck. There were
no injuries but damage was
done to both machines. The
pavement was frosty at the time.
Mayor John Houston said he
would look into the matter.
