FREE PRESS
NEW YORK, Nov. 19 (.Pi-
Kent Cooper, general manager
and executive director of The
Associated Press, declared the
world "needs the benefactions of
a free press entirely rid of gov
ernment control."
Addressing the annua! dinner
of the English-speaking union
U.n night. Cooper expressed be
lief that peace could be main
tained only -by short-circuiting
self-seeking, predatory govern
ments through letting the people
of each nation really know the
peoples of other nations.
This can best be brought
about," he said, "through the
medium of a world wide free
press and freedom of interna
tional news exchange that will
establish an international com
munity of interest."
Calling for immediate action
to guarantee universal freedom
of information. Cooper declared:
"I would not wait until the
war ends, then to have these vi
tal elements tossed around upon
the sea of indecision and intrigue
that always prevails in . peace
negotiations.
"So important do I believe the
matter to be that I would ask
acceptance of the proposals in
volved in advance of any sup
port or aid given by the United
States in the reconstruction of
the economic life of any country
devastated by this war, besides
imposing acceptance upon the
enemy."
He added that "we should see
to it that America holds forth
inexorably for the things that
are a prime necessity to make
world wide community of inter
est oossible among tnem a
world wide free press, a world
wide communications system
and the necessary facilities for
newsmen to do their work
everywhere without intcrfer
ence. For myself I would pro
claim now mat we expect to ac
complish this in the peace."

Pilcher to Face
Cruelty Charges
CANBY, Nov. 29 (JP) Paul
Pilcher, who is accused of mov
ing away from his farm at
Mulino and leaving his livestock
behind, faced charges of cruelty
to animals and stream pollution
today.
He pleaded guilty to stream
pollution after his two deserted
cows floundered into a creek
and died. A cruelty to animals
charge, to which he pleaded in
nocent, is still pending.
Meanwhile Pilcher's former
neighbors complained that an
abandoned hungry horse and a
herd of pigs are bounding wild
about Mulino. Pilcher, now a
Gervais resident, declared they
were not his.
