LAWLER RECEIVES STAR
First Lt. Vincent R. Lawlcr.
husband of Mrs. Esther Lawler,
assistant secretary of the Klam
ath chamber of commerce, has
been awarded the Bronze Star
for "meritorious achievement in
connection with military opera
tions, against the enemy at
Netherlands East Indies between
September 16 and October 28.
Ills wife received his citation,
stating that Lt. Lawler of the
engineer construction battalion,
"charged with the highly im
portant task of constructing
causeways to an oil Jetty and
to a floating wharf, utilized field
expedients, made bold use of ex
plosives and available equip
ment, and displayed outstanding
engineering knowledge and
Judgment in the. pursuance of
his task."
"Lt. Lawlcr a outstanding per
formance of duty," the citation
read, "was in keeping with the
highest traditions of military
service."
Lt. Lawlcr is the son of Mr.
and Mrs. E. W. Lawlcr of Oak
land, Calif. He is a graduate
of St. Mary's university, and en
listed soon after Pearl Harbor.
HAZARDOUS NIGHT
An article appeared in the
Chico paper recently concerning
an exciting nignt mission in
Guam of Cpl. Bruce Parks, for
merly of Modoc Point, Ore., and
son of Mr, and Mrs. P. F. Parks,
who have many friends here In
Klamath Falls.
Taking badly needed ammu
nition to the front on Orote
peninsula, Cpl. Parks and six
other leatherneck transport men
were snot at by Jans, naa one
truck break down in a ditch and
another closely escaped running
over a land mine. The round
trip of 10 miles took them five
hours to complete, but tney
reached headquarters safely
shortly before daylight.
Col. Parks attended Chiloquin
high school and entered the ser
vice in 1941. He has been over
seas 29 months.

whom Sheriff John Bradley of
Fort Benton said had admitted
being the father and father-to-be
of six children by four wom
en in North Dakota. Washing

at liberty today under $1000
bond after pleading innocent
to a Mann act charge.
Sheriff Bradley quoted Mar
tin as saying he was the father
of two children born out of
wedlock to a woman in Bremer
ton. Wash., a child born five
months ago to a nurse in North
Dakota, and is the expectant
father of a child by a ureat
Falls woman, formerly of Bremerton.
Martin was visited yesterday
at the Cascade county jail by
his wife, Mrs. Beona Martin,
formerly of Whitehorse, Y, T.
They have a nine-year-old son
and are expecting another child.

Be Tagged For
Essential Uses
WASHINGTON, Nov. 27 (P)
The war production board said
today that any refrigerators'
manufactured under the spot au
thorization plan will be tagged
for highly essential uses.
They will be added to the
frozen stockpile of refrigerators,
now down to 48,000 units from
700,000 in February 1942. With
drawals are permitted only to
meet army and navy needs for
Jerome J. Shine, 38, 422 Front,
was fined $100 and 30 days in
police court Monday morning by
Police Judge Harold Franey fol
lowing his arrest Saturday night
on a charge of operating a motor
vehicle while under the influ

Milk From Coal Mine
Supplies Nazi Town
ALSDORF, Germany, Nov. 24
(Delayed) P) This American
occupied German town has been
getting its milk supply from a
herd of 25 Holstein cows 1200
feet under the ground.
Coal mining is the chief in
dustry of Alsdorf, but right now
the outstanding products of its
principal mine are fresh milk,
pork, veal and mutton.,
The cows, some pigs and
sheep were taken underground
by the townspeople in late Sep
tember to protect them from
shellfire and bombs and from
other Germans who wanted
them. The town is still under
intermittent shellfire and the
animals remain safe and sound
inside the mine.
Girl Sought For
Questioning On
Death of Child
VAKIMA, Nov. 27 (P) A 19-year-old
Toppenish girl, in
whose apartment was found the
body of five-year-old "Butchy"
Langley Saturday, is being
sought for questioning, Deputy
Sheriff Bert Guns reported yes
terday. Guns said the child's foster
mother, Mrs. Grace Langley of
Mullan, Idaho, said she had left
the boy in the care of the girl
while she worked in Mullan
and the foster father, Virgil
Langley, was working in Los
Angeles.
Deputy Bud Burleson and
Guns said the child's body was
found lying on a bed by Earl
ciegnom, a friend of the girl.
