his brother, Pfc. Masatsu Uyeda,
with whom he farmed at Orange
Grove, Calif., was seriously

Pfc. Yasuaki G. Abe, 27, was
wounded on October 19 in
France, accoroing to word re-
ceived by his parents, Mr. and
Mrs. Y. Abo. The famiiy farmed
near Marysville Calif., before .ill
persons nf Japanese descent were
evacuated fro n the coast.
Matajiro Tsuda, formerly of
Sacramento, was notified that his
nephew, Pfc. Masamitsu Tsuda
was seriously wounded in France
on October 20.
Also on October 20, Private
John Okada, nephew of Mrs.
Itsuji Kakiuchi, was killed in ac
tion in France according to word
she received here. He lived in
East Palo Alto, Calif.

Legislature to Eye
New Road Tax Plan.
PORTLAND. Nov. 27

the governor's interim commit
tee for the study of motor trans
portation, which would change
the road tax system for trucks
and buses.
Under the plan these vehicles
would pay a flat $5 registration
fee, plus $3.75 to 17.68 mills per
mile, according to their weight,
for all over 4000 pounds.
After periodically reporting to
the public utilities commission
their total mileage traveled in
Oregon, the truck and bus own
ers would be refunded the
amount of gasoline taxes paid.
The system would yield
Sl,300,000 more than at present,
estimated committee Chairman
C. B. McCullough, and would tax
the vehicles according to actual
highway use.

camps for 10 days during the
September fire season forced

For Furniture Puzzle
PORTLAND, Nov. 27 (VP)

Attorney L. E. Latourette said
today.
The furniture belongs to Mrs.
Cecil Jones, who was evicted
from her residence six months
ago. The furniture was placed
in the street and there it has
remained through all kinds of
weather.

William J. Nichols, 30, former
Bonanza and Mulln resident,
died November 21 at St. Charles
hospital in Bond from burns re
ceived in an accident the pre
vious day at Redmond.
Nichols was working with the
U. S. bureau of reclamation at
Redmond, operating a duinpstor
truck, when the machine over
turned and caught fire. Nichols
was pinned beneath the truck.
In addition to his wife, Margie,
and f ive-nionth-old daughter
Carol Ann, Nichols is survived
by one brother, Robert G. Niclv
ols, 331 N. 9th. His parents
were the late Mr. and Mrs. Har
ry Nichols of Bonanza.
A graduate of Bonanza high
school, Nichols was-well known
in that community. He worked
for quite some time on con
struction of Camp Tuleluke at
Newell, and was employed in
that work until two weeks be
fore his death. Final rites were
held November 25 at Redmond.

Motorists Urged
To Check Cars
SALEM. Nov. 27 (.) Sec
retary of State Robert S. Far-
rell Jr. today urged motorists to
check their cars immediately so
thev will be in good condition to
combat winter driving hazards.
Safe driving practices will re
duce winter accidents, he said,
and would eliminate consider
able absenteeism which results
when war workers have acci
dents on their way to and from
work.
Ceilings Restored
On Noble Fir Logs
WASHINGTON, Nov. 27 (!P)
Restoration of premium price
ceilings for aircraft grades of
west coast Noble fir logs "be
cause of an unforeseen increase
in requirements submitted by
the army air forces," was an
nounced yesterday by the office
of price administration. The
ceilings went into effect Satur
day.
In the Puget bound, witiapa
Bay-Grays Harbor and Colum
bia river districts the ceiling is
$45 per 1000 feet, log scale. Ceil
ing in the Tillamook district is
$43 per 1000 feet.
The OPA also announced can
cellation of a provision allowing
additions to maximum prices in
cases of overtime work ot 04
or 60 hours or more a week. Be
cause of winter weather, few
operators are logging more than
48 hours weekly, the OPA said.
Loggers may continue to add
$1 per 1000 feet when labor
forces work over 48 hours.

Elderly Native of
Oregon Passes Away
GRANTS PASS, Nov. 27 (fF)
One of the state's oldest Oregon
born citizens, J. W. Mitchell, 84,
died here Sunday at the home
of his son, W. A. Mitchell.
Born at bilvcrton. May 17
1860, he homesteaded near the
present site of Grand Coulee
dam. On one hunting trip his
campsite was what is now the
neart ot bpokane.
Among Eskimos of Repulse
Bay it is not unusual for friends
to exchange wives occasionally
lor a week or two.
