Mike Turnesa Surges Ahead
In Portland Golf Tourney

By RUSS NEWLAND
PORTLAND, Ore., Nov. 25 (.P)
ine forgotten man ol trie tour
nament, his name Mike Tur-
nesa of White Plains, N. Y., was
leading the Portland open today
as a crack field of professionals
and amateurs teed oft in the
third round of the 72-hole open,
$13,500 war bond event.
Mike, one of the seven Tur
nesa brothers of the links and
a veteran of the sport, was com
pletely overlooked when the fir
ing started two days ayo. Less
spectacular than many of his
fellow pros, he put together the
two most consistent rounds for
a 36-hole total of 142 and the
No. 1 position in the parade.
Heavy fooling underneath, and
greens made more tricky by
water failed to affect Turnesa's
game. He racked up a 36-35 71
first round to take second place
in the race. Identical nine hole
scores yesterday enabled him to
pass the opening day's leader,
Sam Snead of Hot Springs, Va.
Sncad, just out of the navy
and the main attraction of the
tournament, trailed Turnesa by
two shots as he went into third
round action. After a two under
par 70 for the first day. Slam-
min' Sam lost his puttine touch
yesterday to take a 74, Ho was
still within easy striking dis
tance. However.
Behind these two were Zell
Eaton, long time competitor, sel
dom winner, now registered
from Los Angeles, and Harry
Bassler, chunky Culver City,
Calif., entry. Eaton's efforts re
sulted in 72-73 145 while Eas
ier coupled a pair of 73's for
his 14li.
Byron Nelson of Toledo, O.,
biggest money winner of the
year and twice a former nation
al champion, had a 36-hole total
of 147. He shared the spot with
Denny Shuto of Akron, O., one
time British open winner as well
as a twice PGA titleholder; Jack
Gage, slim little Santa Barbara
player who recently turned pro
and once wore the California
amateur crown; and Willie Cog
gin. White Plains, N. Y.
Far back and with only the!
slimmest chances of getting a!

biggest guns in the pro gang.
They included Bob Hamilton of

second high money winner of
the year, with 151 and two-time
former national open champ,
Ralph Gulduhl of San Diego,
with 153.
