States navy and away from home

served to service men along

tho Marine Barracks and Uni
versity of Oregon basketball
teams who played that night.

League Meets
The League of Women Voters,
at a regular meeting Held No
vember 20, went on record as
favoring the extension of Bon
neville transmission lines to
Klamath Falls, and has written
Oregon senators to that effect,

Wrap Holiday Gifts
Members of the Officers Wives club of the Marine Barracks
ore getting In Christmas licks a little early this year by estab
lishing a gift wrapping table in the post exchange at the Barracks
for men on the base.
Starting last Wednesday, members of the club in groups of
two, manned the table and busied themselves by wrapping gift,
lying tnem witn reel ana green
paper ribbon and then, if the
marine so asked, wrapped them
securely for mailing.
Mailing for members of the
marine corps Is a snap, as com
pared to the problems of towns
folk. They have their own post
office on the base and can walk
down a couple of doors and the
package Is on Its way.
Blankets, Jewelry, gift sets,
and nractlcallv everything that
anyone would buy for a Christ
mas present, is Doing nnnaeti
over to the marine officers'
wives to wrap for tho folks back
home. Christmas seals for the
benefit of the tuberculosis cam
paign, are being sold at me
table, otherwise everything is
free.
There is a dearth or rcnny
grotty wrapping paper, gay rib
on and especially gift enclos
ure cards. If you have a little
extra bit of bright stuff you
would be willing to pass on to

Howard of this city, announced her engagement to Flight
Officer Melvin Miller, now stationed ot Albuquerque, New
Mexico. The news was told at o fireside at the Delta Gamma
house of the University of Oregon, where Virginia is a junior
this year. '

Thanksgiving Ball
Opens New Season
The Elks' annual Thanksgiving ball opened the winter social
season of tho lodge on Wednesday evening, November 22. Over
350 Elks and their wives attended the large formal dance, held
in the ballroom of the Elks temple.
Music for dancing was provided by Pappy Gordon's orchestra
and supper -was served ot 1 .

Several cocktail parties were
given before the dance and just
preceding the dsncing hour, cock
tails were served to members of
the dance committee in the Pine
room.
Co-chairmen of arrangements

A formal dancing party for
enlisted men is being planned
for Friday, December 1, at the
Elks temple, the affair arranged
by the Elks committee and the
first formal to be given. I

ing.
The November meeting of
Alpha chapter was held at the
home of Stella Bowne on High
street. A panel discussion pre
sented the main features of re
tirement bills of Washington,
California, Montana, Wisconsin
and the one which the OSTA
expects to present to this ses
sion of the Oregon legislature.
A gift of silverware was pre
sented from members of the
chapter to Ruth Obenchain.
Borghild Mehlen was chairman
of the program, assisted by Edna
Bloom, Bernice Elliott and Doro
thy Bailie. ,
The culmination of a high school romance was revealed
Thursday, November 16, when Virginia Howard, daughter of
Mrs. Bonnie Howard, 443 Laguna, announced her betrothal to
Flight Officer Melvin Miller, son of Mr. and Mrs. Dick B. Miller,

The news of her engagement was given to large group of
her friends In the living room
or tne Delta uamma house at the
University of Oregon, and the
disclosure came as a surprise to
everyone.
1 The announcement was made
at a fireside just after closing
hours, with the glow from the
fire furnishing the only light
in the room. An airplane of
flowers was placed in the center
of the floor, surrounded by a
circle of white candles. Another
ring of candles was arranged in
front of this, Into which a large
pink and white tiered cake, top
ped with the names "Ginny and
Mel" was placed by the "skip
per" of the house.
On the following evening, a
party was given for Miss Howard
and her sorority sisters who are
in the Junior class.
Both Virginia and Melvin
graduated from Klamath Union
high school with the class of
1942, and entered the University
of Oregon in September ef the
same year. It was here that
Virginia was chosen "Cover
Girl" during the spring term of
her freshman year. At this time,
her picture appeared on the
cover of the Emerald, the daily
paper, the Old Oregon, a month
ly alumnae magazine, and the
Organa, year book.
Melvin is attached to the
army air corps, and at present,
is stationed at Albuquerque, New
Mexico.
No date has been set for the
wedding.
Honored
Mrs. John Kennedy was hon
ored at a luncheon on Satur
day, November 18, by the
Guardian's association of Camp
Fire girls.
The group met at the Pelican,
and following the luncheon,
Mrs. Kennedy was presented
with a gift in appreciation of
her splendid work as the ex
ecutive secretary of the Camp
Fire girls. Mrs Kennedy has
long been active in this work,
having served for the past seven
years as executive of the Klam
ath Falls council. Prior to that
time she had also been guardian
and camp counsellor, so it was
with a great deal of regret that
the guardians learned of her
recent resignation.
Those present at the lunch

The Christian Endeavor group
will have a booth, featuring
homemade candies.

come early in order to have
their choice of the many attrac
tive articles.

Presbyterian .church, who was

ton, spoke on the theme of
"Faith in Divine Power" as an
aid to the acquisition of secur
ity. He said that to be secure
in our house, in our work, and
in our freedom we must recover
the validity of spirit.
