Many people have already done this, but undoubtedly there are still rooms and apartments in many nouses that can be opened up for this purpose. Those householders who do It will be making a real contribution to the happiness of the men who have been fighting for our country on the teaming Pacific battlefronts. That fact should bring cheerful sacrifices in convenience, strict home privacy, etc.. Let's think it over, Klamath people. It probably iMt news today to report that bn t ; getting very bright. Sj, Newcomers, especially milt- lary people, are still hunting deperately for quarters in town. We talked to a man this morning whose experience may be regarded as typical. An officer who served long over teas with the marines, he re turned three weeks ago from p. renorted here and then left for the east ana souin on ni ju-uay 6 He' joined his family wife and two children whom he had not seen for a long time. They hipped their household goods to Klamath Falls, and the four of them arrived a few days ago. Since then, they have been on the hunt for a house or apartment, thus far without success. Their hotel isn't anxious to keep them very long, and the cost of staying at a hotel for any lengthy period is almost prohibitive for them. It's a tough situation, and there are many of them. These men, back from long absence in which they have faced things most of us know nothing about, want and have a right to live with their families. Many of the single men may be expected to marry the sweethearts who have waited for them. Klamath Falls is the city to which they are bringing their families. . Permanent Personnel THIS situation promises to be further compli cated by the establishment of permanent personnel at the Marine Barracks. This will include a considerable number of officers and men, and because of their permanent status a lareer-than-usual percentage of them will be News Behind the News By PAUL MALLON WASHINGTON, Nov. 17 Mr. Churchill's estimate of six months for the end of the war In Europe is generally accepted here, al though no official has said anything "lud aooul it, having grown tired of guessing. The weather has been of a kind thus far which would discourage even an optimist. It is what the British, with characteristic under statement, called wretched. True, ihe Patton drive is meeting with suc cess, but the nature of it, as far as developed, plainly indicates its limited objectives which are the Mctz forts. With good fortune it will merely approach the Siegfried line at that point and still be a long way from the Saar valley, which is the source of coal and iron for the war Industries. Counts on Drive WITH the weather likely to become steadily worse through the winter, Mr. Churchill seems to be counting mainly on a spring drive. Also the estimate of "Assistant President" . Byrnes that Antwerp would be restored and ready this week leaned too heavily toward wish fulness. There is much dredging and mine clearing to be done before this supply base, which is essential for fullest operation, is ready for use. You can take your pick of the rumors about Hitler being ,ln the bughouse, hospital, in hiding, at his suDDosedlv favorite phobia, chewing rugs, or any of the other second-hand stories out of Germany except the oftlciai explanation nanaeo. out bv the German news agency as an excuse for the Himmler special .broadcast the one that Hitler was too busy .to speak. None of the real authorities here-had-anything they would call valid information at the time Himmler spoke although much circumstantial evidence was available to support the doubt about the official nazi exDlanation. In case anyone is cuddled up under the bed in fear of the German rocket gun, which the war department officially announced just be fore election might soon hit these shores, he can come out now. The statement was in the nature of a warn ing, just to get officialdom on record in .case HrT com .. m ii'vic t. m me. u. i t 'JZll Zj endeavor rail aesp.l Chepel J o. jorfenaon. pa.icr. m m iih srvtem Sunday, u a. m morning worahlp and 7: evannellttic aervtcea. On the other side, we have the 80 housing units to be built for families of navy and marine personnel on the former school site at the south edge of the city. Bids are being opened in a few days on this project. This will help relieve the shortage, but it appears inadequate and furthermore, experience has shown that such housing does not rise in a few weeks. It took many months to get 40 units of row housing built here, and that Is the only additional hous ing brought to Klamath Falls since the military installations opened. It would seem that the 80-unit program should be expanded to 160 immediately. The site, we are told, will accommodate such ex pansion. It is time for government and local agencies to realize the inevitability that a substantial percentage of marines returning here from the Pacific fighting are going to have dependents in Klamath Falls. . What Can You Do? MEANWHILE, local people who have any sort of suitable quarters which they can rept to military personnel are urged to list these quarters with the chamber of commerce the possibility of any real damage to us from that source is remote. a 300-Mile Radius IT is true enough the V-J now has a radius of about 300 miles and there is no known scien tific impediment to prevent the expansion of this radius up to 3000 miles eventually. But this ordinarily would require years of develop ment, and anyway the war department was not speaking of this vague future possibility; years distant may be never. The official statement relates to present-day rocket radius possibilities and said the bombs would have to be launched trom suumarines or shins. Germany has a few submarines left, but most of the docks for them are gone and a submarine could hardly carry more than one or two of these larger-type bombs. A large- scale attack from these is impossible. As for an attack by surface ships, the United Nations control the ocean and it would be difficult if not impossible for a surface vessel to get out of a German harbor and approach these shores without detection. Certainly no large-scale fleet attack is within the realm of any current imaginatjon.
