Troffic Safety Week
Sponsored by Jaycces
The week of November 13 to
20 has been designated as Traffic
Safety Week, and the enterprise
Is being sponsored by the Junior
chamber of commerce. Each year
tho large number of traffic acci
dents and deaths throughout tho
nation reach n staggering figure.
A compilation of figures from
three of the largest garages in
Klamath Falls reveal that they
have repaired a total of 220 auto
mobiles and trucks which have
been damaged by collision dur
ing the first nine months of 1944.
Tho total cast of repairing these
vehicles amounted to $34,300.
Since these figures Include but
three garages, the above statis
tics represent only a small per
centage of the total property
damage caused by accident.
Collisions, expensive both In
money and in lives, can bo avoid
ed through care in driving, and
care is being stressed by Junior
chamber of commerce members
during this safely week.

LABOR DISPUTE ACT
BALTIMORE, Nov. IS W)
A federal court ruling uphold
ing the constitutionality of the
war labor disputes act, report
ed by attorneys to be tho first
decision on the question, has
been handed down by judge
William C. Coleman,
Judge Coleman decided that
the statute, also known as the
Smith-Connally anti-strike law
was valid in connection with a
$.100.000 1 d a m a g e suit by a
Maryland contracting firm
against AFL 'unions and offi
cials. Congress had the authority.
Judge Coleman held, to Impose
what he called the "rather
mild" provisions of the act.
The ruling was made on ar
guments preliminary to the try
ing of the damage action and
in connection with motions
made by union attorneys in
which the constitutionality of
the statute was questioned.

FRANCIS M. LEMAY
SHINGTON. Nov. 15 (Pi
Chairman Bloom (D-N.Y.) of
the house foreign affairs com
mittce invited republicans today
to neip amend the constitution
so that treaties can be ratified
by a simple majority of con
gress.
This was his response to a
pledge by House Republican
render Martin, or Massacnu'
setts, that his party's members
of congress would give full sup
port toward "the building of an
enduring peace."
"Treaties should be ratified
by a majority vote in both
houses, instead of rejected by
one-third of the senate, which
leaves the direct representatives
of the people without anything
to say' Bloom said. "Nobody
opposes the idea but a few senators."
Under the constitution as it
stands treaties must be ap
proved by a two-thirds vote in
the senate. The house has no
voice in treaty-making.
