Free Press Needed
For Democracy;
Asserts Candidates
By Thi Aiioclattd Prn
No matter who is circled prcsi
icnt in November, he will t:ikc
up the work of the next four
year with an already-announced
recognition of a free press as es
sential to democracy.
This was apparent today in
statements from President
Roosevelt and Gov. Thomas h.
Dewey in connection with Na
tional Newspaper week, October
1-8.
The nation's free press "is in
the forefront of democracy's bat
tle for survival" and "will help
to win . the peace." Mr. Roose
velt said in a statement which
termed the press "a living sym
bol of democracy."
Freest Press
In a message to publishers and
staffs of newspapers, Dewey
said, "They (the newspapers)
have given America by far the
freest, mast interesting and most
informative press in the world."
Citing what he called "tenden
cies of the government in pow
er," the GOP nominee said he
had "every confidence that our
free press will continue to resist
government domination."
In St. Paul, Senator Ball (R
Minn.) issued a statement to the
Pioneer Press last night saying
that he will not campaign for
Dewey "at this time." Said
Ball:
"I have read or listened to all
of Gov. Dewey's speeches and
statements to dale. He 1ms not
yet convinced me that his own
convictions on this issue arc so
strong that he would fight vigor
ously for a foreign uolicy which
will offer real hope of prevent
ing World War 111. against the
inevitable opposition to such a
policy,
"That being the case, I would
violate my own deepest convic
tion if I were at this time to try
to campaign for Gov. Dewey. I
shall, instead, devote myself to
discussing the issue of foreign
policy and stressing its import
ance to the future of America
at every opportunity, trusting in
the people's judgment on No
vember 7 to make the right deci
sion for America."
Attitude "Excellent"
Vice President Wallace, cam
paigning in western Pennsylvan
ia, described the administration
attitude toward labor as "excel
lent." At Uniontown, he told a
democratic dinner meeting that
a small popular vote "will please
the republicans and give them a
chance to win." i
The politically touchy subject '
of wage increases came up yes
terday when President Roosevelt
conferred with his labor advisory
committee of AFL and CIO lead
ers. The conferees reported that
the president agreed that the Lit
tle Steel wage ceiling eventually
will nave to be eliminated or
revised but some of them exhib
ited a conviction that wage con
trols will not bo disturbed before
the November election.
Talk! With taadart
Mr. Roosevelt reportedly dis
cussed with labor leaders the po
litical implications of making
any change in wage control he-
tore the election but what he
said was not officially disclosed.
In Philadelphia, Rep. Clare
Rooth Luce (R-Conn.. termed
Dewey "(he Inevitable man" and
told Pennsylvania republic wom
en that he will lead (he way to a
"people's peace."
President Roosevcli, she de
clared, "played Charlie McCar
thy to Sidney Hillman's Bergen"
in his September 23 speech be
fore the Teamsters' union at
Washington,
Norman Thomas. socialist
presidential candidate, asserted
at a public meeting in Los Ange
les last night that continuation of
the European war is due "in verv
large part" to a demand for mi-
conditional surrender by Ger
many. The new anti-Roosevelt Flor
ida independent party lost a su
preme court suit to obtain space
on the general election ballot for
its electors.
