KANSAS CITY Two youths
charged with robbing a filling
station explained to police that
they had reasons for their ac
tion. One needed money for a
loan. Ho had borrowed $29 so
ho could pay a recent court
fine. The other said he needed

On Charges of Assauli
LOS ANGELES, Sept. 13 (VP)
Bandleader Tommy Dorsey, the
"sentimental gentleman of
swing," has been Indicted along
with Ills actress wife, Put Dane,
on charges of assaulting Screen
Actors Jon Hall and Eddie Nor
ris. Also named in (he county
grand Jury's charges of "assault
by means of force likely to pro
duce great bodily harm ' to Hall
and Norrls was Movie Director
Allen Smiley.
The three were indicted .after
they hud declined to testify yes
terday about a "battle of the
balcony" last August S lit Trom
bonist Dorsey's swank Hollywood
apartment.
The long-haired Hall, husband
of Radio Singer Frances Lang
ford, has said he was almost dis
associated from the end of his
nose, and Norrls, going to his
friend's rescue, declares he was
knocked fiat by somebody with
one punch.
The principals haven't public
ly explained the cause of the
fracas, however.
Dorsey wasn't in a communi
cative mood when Deputy Dis
trict Attorney Edwin Myers be
gan to interrogate him about the
scrap. Myers said the musician
pulled a piece of paper from his
pocket and read: "I refuse to
testify on tho ground that it
might tend to incriminate and
degrade me."
Tommy's wife and Smiley read
the same typewritten statement,
the prosecutor said. The whole
thing took less than 10 minutes.
Lawyers announced that the
trio would appear for arraign
ment tomorrow.

Paris is a lovely place. The peo
ple are most cordial and hos
pitable. But you still have to
keep your dukes up.
A blonde young lady at a
cocktail party was very pleasant,
spoke both English and French
expertly, said she was an Ameri

man, and chatted about this and

'Oh. I'm st 11 so afraid of Ger
man bombers," she said. "I wish
they wouldn't take the anti-aircraft
guns away."

I suggested that anti-aircraft
batteries often change positions.
"But then why have all the
boys left the hotel where they
were billeted?" she asked a lit
tle too directly.
Later she sighed and said she
had a lot of cousins in the United
States army whom she hadn't
seen for years. Was there any
way she could find out if they
are here, she wondered.
She volunteered names some
named Johnson, some named
Moore, then one with a very un
usual name.
I sueeested that the army ca
per, Stars and Stripes, might
help.
"Oh, I've asked them and they
say they can't," she replied

write your umt under it, too."
