Taylor of Klamath Falls.
Ore., recently was awarded the
Silver Star for gallantry In ac
tion on the fifth army front In
taly
Taylor and an enlisted man,
serving In the 45th "Thunder-
bird Infantry division, moved
forward in the face of German
machincguns and grenades. Ris
ing to ma knees, the lieutenant
threw hand grenades, killing
four Jerries and destroying a
machlncgun. He relumed to his
lines with Informat on which
made possible a successful at-
iacK on tne enemy outpost.
Taylor's "gallant and aggres
sive action under hostile fire re
flects the high traditions of our
armed forces," the citation read.
His mother, Mrs. May Taylor,
lives at 310 N. 7th, Klamath
Falls.
Lewis N. Taylor, formerly of
Klamath Falls, was recently
promoted from staff sergeant to
technical sergeant at the air
transport command replace
ment center , at Camp Luna,
Ni Mex.
He entered the army on May
14. 1042. and was an active
member of the Eagles lodge at
trie time or nis enlistment.

anese vessel was sunk so close
to shore today that a dock build
ing flew apart with it under
blasting from bombs of a raiding
army plane at Kapari Saki on
faramumui'o island.
The B-25 Mitchell, piloted by
Lt. Donald William Hofferth of
Jackson, Mich., flew clear across
the North Pacific to the Sea of
Okhotsk to strike at the south
western tip of Paramushlro. It
was tho deepest penetration
made thus far Into the Kurlles
by a plane of the "New Broom"
squadron which has been attack
ing and sinking enemy vessels in
the North Pacific since last May.
. Lt. Hofferth brought his me
dium bomber down to deck level
and dropped three bombs to send
the boat and building sky high.
The plane was so close Japanese
could easily be see . standing in
the doorway of the building just
before the bombs struck.
It was the fourth timo bombs
aimed by Lt. Evans had scored
hits in the squadron's "clean
sweeping" campaign.
