Tony Morelli's attempted foul

on Friday night at the urmory.
The first fall wus not won by

he picked up Wally ond not-so-

Now Wally sheds no love for

rising because of Tony's unfair

peak When he found himself

The bout continued and, at
times, it seemed as if Moss and

his danucr up and couldn't take
any more ol Tony's dirty play.
As a result, Morelll shortly

Owens took the first fall on

evening occurred In tho second
round when Owens und Beleas
tro started throwing themselves
at each other in attempted body
butts. Neither managed to con

of the ring. No one gained a fall
during this round.
In the third, Beleastro applied
a powerful hammcrlock to
Owens and won a fall. In the
lourth stanza, Pete knew he had
the arm in bad condition, so he
headed for it the first thing and
won the deciding fall with self
same hammcrlock.
Milt Olscn was called on to

had dropped Buck on his head

Newhouser
Enters 20-
Win Club
Detroit Ace First to Hit
Cherished Mark With 3-0
Victory Over Boston
By JACK HAND
Associated Press Sports Writer
Detroit's Hal Newhouser Is the
first paid up member of the ex
clusive 20-win club of 1044, with
excellent prospects of hirtine the
23 mark before the curtain drops
in six weeks.
The tall southD aw. who
crashed the majors from De
troit s sandlots at the ripe old age
of 18 back in 1039 when such a
feat bordered on the sensational, I
tamed Boston 3-0 in the first
game of yesterday's double-header.
Newhouser never won more
than 0 in the same season in his
baseball career that has been
spent in his native Detroit except
tor a few months in 1B3B in the
Evangeline and Texas leagues.
Last year he captured and
dropped 17 for a record that was
outstanding in a backhand way
because he led the league in
bases on balls.
Steve O Neill nut him on a
steady work diet in '44 and he
thrived, workine every fourth
day and often with only one or
two days rest to start or relieve.
Appearing in 223 innings, he al
lowed 187 hits, walked 81 and
lpd both leagues in strikeouts
with 119 by hanging up a 20-7
record that included 16 complete
games.
The Tigers regained undisput
ed possession of third place on
Newhouser's victory, although
they bowed to the Red Sox 7-4 in
the second game as Johnny Cor
sica's losing streak was extended
to nine.
St. Louis lost a half game by
bowing to Philadelphia 5-4 in a
night game but still boasted a
6 i length margin over the Red
Sox. Jittery Joe Berry tamed the
Browns in a relief role as the A's
slammed Tex Shirley and two
successors for 11 hits, scoring all
their runs in the fifth.
Mel Harder shut out the New
York Yankees for Cleveland 2-0
witn Koy Cullenbine scoring
both runs, the second being his
I3tn nomer off Rookie Mel
Queen, who allowed only -five
safeties.
Chicago made it three straight
over wasmngton. 2-1.
Pittsburgh's 11-game win
streak was snapped 3-2 by the
Phils' Ken Raffensberger. who
defeated Rip Sewell and dropped
the pirates into a second-place tie
with Cincinnati.
Art Herriny s major league
comeback got off to a bad start
with the Brooklyn pitcher los
ing both games to Cincinnati, the
first as a starter, 1-0 and the
nightcap in relief, 7-6, when the
Red spurted for four runs in the
ninth.
St. Louis stretched the New
York Giants losing streak to 11
by notching their seventh
straight victory, 5-2, behind Har
ry Brecheen. Chicago combined
Claude Passeau's steady pitching
with a 13-hit attack to humble
Boston, 5-3.
Scorns Stop
Angels 6-3
' By Th Associated Press
The second division Oakland
Acorns stopped the Los Angeles
Angels, Coast league leaders,
by a 6 to 3 score last night as
Hollywood and Portland tri
umphed to better their second
and third place standings.
Butch Moran drove in four
runs for Hollywood as the Stars
downed the San Francisco
Seals, 10 to 3. One of Moran's
hits was a double in the fifth
with the bases loaded which
gent two men home.
Sid Cohen held the Seattle
Rainiers to four hits as the
Portland Beavers won, 4 to 0.
It was Cohen's second succes-
a shutout and four-hitter.
Only one Beaver run was
earned off Joe Demoran, the
Rainiers making four errors.
The tail-end San Diego
Padres rallied in the ninth inn
ing to defeat seventh-place Sac
ramento, 3 to 1.
Kenny Gables held the An
gels to three hits in winning
for Oakland. All of the Angel
runs crossed the plate on John
ny Ostrowski's home run.
