Detroit Latest Threat
To Browns' League Lead
Hot and Cold Tigers Stage Win Streak
As St. Louis Drops Game to Yankees
By JACK HAND
Aaaociated Press Sporta Writer
Detroit's hot and cold Tigers
emerged as the latest "threat"
to the bt. Louis Browns today
with an 8-game win streak giv
ing them renewed hopes of
catching the leaders.
Although the Tigers held third
place by only a half game over
the Yankees, they trailed Boston
by only li games and were com
ing on fast. If the Brownies
show any signs of faltering, De
troit, eight lengths back, could
challenge during the final weeks
when all western clubs will be
home.
Detroit's two-man pitching
staff of Hal Newhouser and Diz
zy Trout, each with 10 wins,
found a new partner last niaht
in Stubby Overmire, who yield
ed 12 hits but chimed In with
three blows on his own behalf in
annual national semi-pro base
ball tournament.
The current brainchild of the
National Baseball Congress'
prcxy proved both confusing and
amusing lo the fans what with
two-way traffic around the bases
and the scoreboard even running
backward. -
And once, when two players
in the exhibition between the
Wichita Boeings and Beech Fly
ers, also a Wichita team, raced
to second from opposite direc
tions and dived for, tne bag in a
cloud of dust that would bewild
er the sharpest ump in the busi
ness, Umpire-In-Chief Paul Fair
just couldn't contain himself.
He lust threw up his hands.
called both men sale and took
time out for a hearty laugh.
Then there ' was the big
seventh, when Everett Dannels,
Boeing hurler, issued five inter
national passes "just to see what
would happen." He found nut
when the next batsman laced a
mighty triple to clean the bases.
Incidentally, the Beech Flyers
won, 12 to 6.
The major league scouts who
witnessed the affair agreed "it
was a nice show," but Joe Cam
bria of the Washington Senators
added a "Nuts."
McSpaden, Nelson
Satisfied With
Spokane PGA Course
SPOKANE, Wash.. Aug. 12 ()
Harold "Jug" McSpaden and
Byron Nelson, two of profession
al golfing's "big four," expressed
satisfaction with the Manito
Golf and Country club course
today after testing the route of
the $20,000 Professional Golfers
association tournament next
week.
Both toured the 18 holes in a
par 72 yesterday after getting off
the train, but it was evident to
other golfers that they were
merely practicing and getting
the feel of the greens.
Craig Wood and Sam Byrd,
two other favorites In the tour
ney, were expected yesterday
but failed to arrive and arc now
scheduled for practice rounds to
day. Also to arrive today were Ed
Dudley, Colorado Springs, Colo.,
and Jimmy Hines, Amsterdam,
N. Y., both former Ryder cup
team members.
Howdy Folks: Didn't I tell
yuh that horse show wuz gonna
be a good one. I jist got a little
homesick when I seed them
harness hosses. Chct Barton a
settin' up thar on that wagon
turnin' slake with four mighty
fine blacks. The big sorrels
and grays wuz awful pretty too.
Clair Bilger and Jack Ray pit
on a sight with the two fine
harness hosses hitched to them
rubber tire buogys. All in all
nobody cud complain at the
sights if you're horse minded.
I got a big wallop out of that
doctor act. Seems to me a saw
filer would have come in handy
as 'Doc' Bill Murchqson wuz a
havin' a little trouble amputat
in' that fellers leg.
Guess 'bout everybody got a
ribbon or prize as I seed it.
Just 'bout every class a new
name wuz announced as the
winner. Did yuh notice thar
wasn't any dust. Charles Perry
spent the morning runnin' the
water wagon 'round. Lynn
Roycroft did the chore of bark
in' or what ever yuh call that
talkin' thru' the announcin'
system. If Lynn keeps up his
improvin' Abe- Lefton better
watch out.
Las' nite the Saddle club
girls wuz out to the Fairgrounds
with brooms and dust pans jist
a cleanin'- the place up spick
an span. They wuz dressed in
their workin' clothes and really
gettin' the job done. The new
Saddle club suits a hangin' in
moth balls until Labor Day
when the next horse blow-out
comes off in Lakeview.
I've been a watchin' the geese
lately and they're a headin"
south which reminds me I too
better be a gittin'. The pleasure
has been all mine in a writin'
this little column for the horsey
.set, but times is here when I'm
a hangin up my saddle and
turn my old hoss out to pasture
until next spring. As I've heer
ed some jot the big folks say,
this is thirty for now.
Bye now,
'TOP-WRANGLER.
