marks by opening a spurt on
May 28 that has produced 11
wins in 12 starts and boosted
him into a tie with Bucky Wal
ters of the Reds for most shut
outs with five.
As the Cards opened up a
1414-game lead on Cincinnati,
their longest margin of the
year, Cooper hurled a two-hit
shutout against the Phils for a
5-0 decision over Ken Raffens

has wobbled to an 8-7 verdict
over Bill Lee in the opener of
a double. , , . ..

NEW YORK. July 28 P
He's been l'-A in the draft four
times, and 4-F. four times, but
he's the hottest hitter 'in the
American league. We mean Al
Zarilla; the'' St. Louis Browns'
outfielder who has whisked
back - and forth between the
clubhouse, and his draft board
so often that he hardly has had
time to get into a baseball uni
form. "
Two -.weeks . ago, operating
mostly as a pinch-hitter, he had
a batting average of , ;204. Then
he blazed into the starting line
up, ana in nine games has fash
ioned 15 hits in 24 times at bat,
boosting his mark to .286
Sprinkled among the 15 bingles
were three doubles, a triple and
two homers. During the spree
he scored four runs and batted
in 10. He may be 4-F to the
armyt but he's A-l with the
Browns. He's hitting .625 for
me nine contests.

Wrestling Fans to See
Two Newcomers in Ring
Wrestling fans who attend
the matches Friday night will
be treated to the sight of two
men in the ring whom they
didn't see last Friday.
One of the men, Roddy
O'Dowdy, will tangle with Bull
dog Jackson in the opener. The
other will be in all three events
from the start to the finish.
This superman is merely a1
different referee. He is known
as Billy Konke ' in wrestling
circles where he has done quite
a bit of professional grappling
himself.
Tony Morelli,: who is meeting
Buck Lipscomb in a slam-bang
middle event, claimed Wally
Moss was prejudiced against
him and Tony went so far as
to say that if Moss was referee
again he wouldn't fight.
To make everybody happy
Promoter Mack Lillard gave
Wally a vacation and hired
Konke to - manage the- night's
affairs. -
- Faavo Katonen and Herb
Parks are the main eventers
and their bout is expected to
draw quite a crowd because of
the- clean, skillful, sportsman
like show they put on.
