Caution Urged by Chief
To Prevent Fires in Town
Fire hazards are at their great
est peak from now until the lat
ter part of Soptombcr and care
should be taken not to start a
fire by throwing matches or cig
arettes In dry grass, Fire Chief
Keith Ambrose warned today.
If care is practiced in town,
chances will not be so great for
fires to be started by carelessness
in the woods, where results are
likely to be disastrous.
Now that the grass In vacant
lota Is dry, the fire department
will soon begin its burning pro
gram, working at It two days a
week. Thcro has been no definite
schedule set for the work yet.
Burning permits can be ob
tained by city residents by call
ing the fire department, and giv
ing their name and address. A
hose should be kept handy and
people should not hesitate to call
the fire department should the
blaze gel out of hand.
"In other words," Ambrose has
stated, "if everyone would use
plain common senso in regard to
preventing fires or keeping them
undor control, the damage by
fire during the dangerous sum
mer season can be greatly cur
