Openings Approved
Openings for Steward's mates
have been approved tor the
United States coast guard in
the 17-year-old age bracket, an
announcement from personnel
procurement officials of the 13th
naval district coast guara or
ganization today reported.
Besides regular- duties, stew
ard's mates are assigned battle
stations aboard ship during gen
eral quarters or fire, collision
and other emergency drills.
Yank Seamen Must ,
Get Passports
WASHINGTON. July 13 M'l
Effective November 15, Amer
ican seamen will not bo able to
ship out of the United States
for a foreign port without a
passport.
By August 15. the state de
partment announced today, sea
men must have either a pass
port or evidence that they have
applied for one within the pre
ceding six months.
The order was issued by the
tecretary of state "in order that
the Interest of tho United States
and its merchant marine may
bo safeguarded by every possi
ble means."
The department also said the
regulation meets legal require
ments that all Americans leav
ing the country have passports.
