Two Scoring Records Set
By Top U. S. Go Teams
By CHARLES CHAMBERLAIN
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn., July
7 yp) With two scoring records
being set in as many days, the
Golden Valley course, a 6582-
yard championship layout, has
taken the beating of its life and
appeared doomed for more par
busting today as some of the
country's top pros drew beads
on a double round of best-ball
team competition.
In yesterday's first round of
the 126-hole marathon, which
concludes Sunday with the win
ning twosome splitting a first
Srlze of $1600 in war bonds, a
tal of 62 birdies and four
eagles were posted by the eight
competing teams.
Leading the way was the fa
vored Jug McSpaden - Byron
Nelson powerhouse with a best
ball of 31-30 61 as compared
with par 37-38 73. They fash
ioned this phenomenal score
an all-time team record for par
breaking despite a high wind

faces for the last eight holes.
VrSnaflpn. winner of five of
his last 13 tournaments, carried
the match most of the way.
Alter taklns a bogey six on the
first hole when he knocked two
balls out of bounds, he dropped
a 40-foot chip shot on the 498
yard sixth for an eagle. This
started him on a sensational
streak during which he went
10 under par on nine consecu
tive holes.
McSpaden Nelson, runner-up
for the 1943 Golden vauey
title, beat Pvt, Chick Harbert
and Mike Turnesa 4-up in their
first test of the round robin
matches. This gave them a plus

Again on the mound for the

Big Jim showed no 111 effects

expressed confidence that he
could raise his strikeout record
of thirteen In the coming tilt.
Returning to tho air station

game. Storey, a veteran from
the Los Angeles Angels, San

Cubs, is a high bnll hitter. In
eight years of play, he has
amassed an average of better
than .320 and will add consid

power. Although ho presents
an ungainly appearance in the
field, few drives get away from
him.
Due to his hitting, Manager
O'Doul of the Seals and Jimmy
Wilson of the Cubs attempted to
make an outfielder and catcher
out of him. His stance showed
definite evidence of the O'Doul
