Know why this picture is unusual?
p This picture illustrates a story that couldn't bo told very
many yoara ago ... a story that but lot's Btart nt the bo
: ginning.
You'ro on a train, S. P.'s Stronmlinod Daylight, lot's any.
i (That's its ongino you boo passing nbovo.) Four nnd a half
i hours ago you loft San Francisco for Los Angeles.
Your train ia climbing up to tho crost of tlio Simla Lucias
P the winding atool path thnt is tho Santa Margarita grado.
But wait. . . look thoro nhond. Another train ia coming
: down. A long froight train. ' '
And thon it happens. Tho thing thnt mnkes tho picture
, above so unusual. Noithor train BtopB. you're on single track,
i tut ncitlicr train stops. Llko tho picture shows, tho two trains
' ; pass. ...
Tho answer? Tlio answor in one of tho most important do-
volopmonla in railroading. It's a $17,000-n-mi' "r'.,,
aUcd C.T.C.-Contralizod Traffic Control.
Miles from tho meeting point of the Daylight and the freight;

f ro81ponH0' 1,10 froigiit glidos onto a passing track, proceeds
rwlucud sixsed-lho Daylight "highballs" pust. Then the
"eight rolls buck onto tlio main lino.
Running timo is saved, for once a heavy freight is stopped
it takes a whilo to regain full speed. And C.T.C. eliminates
dolays for delivery of train orders, and for hand-opening and
closing of switchos by the train crows.
Tho groat sweep of West and South where S. P. lines run
for over 15,000 miles, is a land of vast distances and tough
mountain grades.
Here single track has been adoquate in many cases to handle
normal traffic. But with the abnormal war load, some of this
line required greater capacity. At a timo when new rail is hard
to gof, nnd wo are pressed for mnnpowor, C.T.C. is a bottleneck
buster which holps us mako the existing trackage, carry maxi
mum traffic. ' .. '
Today, besides tho installation over Santa Margarita grade,'
wo have C.T.C. at many important points in California and
along our Overland nnd Sunsot Routes.
, What does all this add up to?
' Just Ms. S. P.'s transcontinental routes bring troops and an,
immense volume of war material from Chicago and New Orleans
' and through tlie Pacific Northwest to Pacific Coast ports for the
uar witli Japan. Where C.T.C. is installed on these routes, the
train handling capacity of single track sections is expanded 50
to 75 per cent.
Tlio Victory trains must keep rolling. C.T.C. is just another
'ny S. P. is making sure thoy do keep rolling faster and faster
