Cherbourg surrendered before dawn today at the end of three
weeks of French invasion which Gen. Eisenhower estimated had
cost the Germans 70,000 casualties.
While three American divisions herded thousands of German
into prison caqes and sorted enormous stores of booty, the British
in a "major attack" on a six to seven-mile front south of Tilly
moved within three miles of Caen, in "very fierce fighting in
torrential rain." , ;
Prisoners since D-Day totaled more than 32,000. Another'
38,000 or more Germans lay dead or wounded and headquarter
said the enemy's casualties were "not less than 70,000." The sev
enth American corps which captured Cherbourg was composed
of the 79th division from Pennsylvania, the 4th and the 9th.
