Direct Blow Seen
Thus, in Mountbatten's back
ground, military observer! found
basis for speculation that a di
rect blow by air and sea may be
aimed in the near future at the
vital port of Rangoon,- even as
the offensive down the Arakan
coast is continued with stepped
up intensity.
Success in reopening the Bur
ma road would serve the double
objective of getting more sup
plies in to the Chinese forces of
Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek,
and as a route for bringing in
fuel for allied planes and bomb
ers for close-up air attack on
: Japan from Chinese bases. .
China Bases
': Increased allied use of Chi
nese, air bases might well com
pel Japan to pull in a substantial
part of her air forces defending
her outlying island empire, and
thereby ease the tough north
ward drive confronting Gen.
Douglas MacArthur.
Upon his arrival here. Mount
batten will find a special mis
sion from his homeland which
came to study "maximum Brit
ish cooperation with the United
States in future operations
against Japan" with the specific
of laying "the logistical founda
tion for Britain s contribution
in that objective.
. Mountbatten will command
American and Chinese as well
as British, Canadian and Indian
forces. One factor probably
taken into consideration in his
appointment is that the pre
ponderance of his troops are
British and principally natives.

Red Star said the Germans at
tempted to make a stand at Zen
kov, concentrating numerous re
serves and organizing special
units for counterattacks.
Fight Along River
The battle for this point was
fought along a river covering
Zenkov from the east. The red
army crossed the river at night,
Red Star said, and forced Ger
mans to withdraw.
The occupation of Zenkov,
north of Oposhnya which was
previously captured, indicated
the Soviets were making their
main effort directly to the west
instead of descending on the sec
ondary objective of Poltava.
Another large German force
was reported defeated in a bat
tle for Akhtyrka, 25 miles north
east of Zenkov, which was final
ly taken by the red army yes
terday after a seesaw struggle.

Spending money for the two
girls' Fourth of July celebration
was secured when one of the
girls stole the coin purse out of
a pocketbook carelessly laid
down open by the owner who
was applying makeup in an
other part of a store restroom.
The coin purse contained $34.
' Rob Station
Just recently the girls ob
tained a little extra spending
money by robbing a service sta
tion at Ninth and High streets.
One of the girls on some pre
tense got the service station at
tendant to go around the side
of the building with her while
the other girl entered the sta
tion and took $15 rolled for
banking.
Unique Bank
Although there are two banks
here, the two young culprits
evidently didn't trust those in
stitutions with their money. In
stead they had it all changed to
bills which they rolled tightly
and hid in the small opening of
the hollow cylinder near the
armrest of a theatre seat. When
their funds got low they went
to the show, somehow secured
the same seat and extracted
some of the reserve supply of
bills with a hairpin. (P. S.
County Juvenile Officer Harold
Hendrickson investigated all the
theatres Thursday and there is
no money left in the theatre
seat armrests).
Now in Custody
Both girls, who are now in
custody of juvenile authorities,
come from broken homes.
Juvenile delinquency of this
sort is steadily being detected
and corrected in Klamath coun
ty by the hard work and coop
eration of city and county law
enforcement and juvenile offi
cers. Volunteer Workers

Discussions
But the president and prime
minister themselves had said dis
cussions still were in order
among various governments con
cerning the administration of
territories to be liberated in Eu
rope. Before the week closes,
they had promised, an announce
ment will be forthcoming from
a number of governments with
reference to relations with the
French committee for national
liberation.
(The first of these announce
ments was issued last night as
dispatches from Algiers disclosed
that the Belgian govcrnment-ln.
exile had recognized the French
committee and that envoys were
being exchanged.)

Persian prince.
The jewels were stolen from

LEWIS ON DEFENSE
(Continued from Page One)
union policy committee meeting
soon was given no support, al
though that has been tha usual
step when Lewis was planning
new exploits.
The statutory status given the
war labor board (WLB) which
ho since defied, the penalties for
striking under tha new war labor
disputes act and the WLB com
pliance sanctions approved by
the president apparently have
forced Lewis to revamp his en
tire strategy. Ho may await the
WLB's decision on the anthra
cite wage dispute before deter
mining upon his next move.
Strike Disclaimed
The Interpretation that a turn
back of the mines to private
ownership automatically meant
a strike is unofficially- disclaim
ed in UMW circles. The policy
committee's statement in June
directed the miners to roturn to
work until October 31 with the
proviso that this agreement
would "automatically terminate"
if the government relinquishes
its custody of the mines before
then. UMW sources now say
this was a reservation, not a
threat and furthermore they em
phasize that it was an official
policy committee. statement and
not a personal commitment by
Lewis. They say in effect, that
no general work stoppage is con
templated, at least for the pre
sent. Oakes Changed

"Relations among Harry, Al

pleasant,' she related, "because

She said Sir Harry later tele

him to leave the Oakes home.
"If you don't get out. I'll kick

De Marigny never again was a
guest at the Oalces' home, she
continued.
"In consequence of this Inci

"Sir Harry changed his will )ast
February 16."
The will has not been filed for
probate, and the witness did not
disclose how the bequests had
been altered.
In her recital. Lady Oakes de
