Stiff Resistance
On the Kharkov front in the
Ukraine, some 240 miles south of
Bryansk,' Russian troops were
said to be encountering stiff re
sistance in attempts to overcome
German defenses based on hills
forming a natural line around
the city.

ing O e r m a n counterattacks,
while the red army air force
pounded heavily at bases in the
enemy near in an endeavor to
cripple supply routes.
Germans Wiped Out

a soviet communique said. Gains

Sends Card Home
A card was received this week
by Mrs. James A. Ryan, mother
of Staff Sergeant Aloiuo Palm
er, who is being held in a Japan
ese prison camp in the Philip
pines.
The card stated that Sergeant
Palmer is uninjured and well
and that his health is good. This
is the third card which has
come to the attention of the
Herald and News in the past
week which has been sent out
by the Japanese government
Palmer fought on Bataan and
has been reported as a prisoner
of war since the battle of Cor-
regidor.
His mother received a letter
from the war department this
week stating that it was now
possible to send packages to
prisoners of war in the Philip
pines.

The Elks feel honored that they
were asked to take the lead in
this huge patriotic undertaking.

Hall was elected first exalted
ruler of Klamath Falls lodge
when It was established 30 years
ago. He was active in the Liberty
loan campaigns of 1917-18. He
has been a leader in civic work
in a long career here, and is now
a member of the county welfare
commission, the city h e a 1 1 h
board, and other groups. He is a
trustee of the Elks lodge.
A downtown headquarters of
the Third War loan will be
opened by September 1. Hall will
announce the general committee
within a day or two.
