School principals for subur
ban localities have all been se
lected, though a complete teach
er list is not yet available. Jan
itors have been working all
summer at most of the schools
doing any repair work neces
sary, and painting, polishing and
waxing floors.
Almost three tons of new. ele
mentary school books which
have been adopted this year by
the state text book commission
are being stamped and number
ed in the county school offices
for distribution at the begin
ning of school.
Not many school changes
have been made for the new
year. Summers school, which
was closed during the middle
of last year to accommodate
CPT training here, will not re
open this year.

Crater Lake mill there. Many
of the Sjyague River students
were children of employes of
this mill.
Final action by the school
board has not as yet been taken
on whether Keno high school
will be closed and students
brought to KUHS each day.
However, it is likely that this
will be done.
County schools will open on
August 3L preceded by a teach
ers meeting on August SO. It is
expected that schools will close
for a period of anywhere from
a week to a month during harv
est season this fall.

ance committee for the purpose
of raising funds to promote the
third war loan drive set to
begin September 8th.
Oregon's outstanding war
pond sales record is due to un
usual promotion programs con
celved and financed in Oregon,
according to E. C. Ssmmons,
state chairman.
One of the a o u r c e a from
which the war bond finance
committee expects to raise funds
for the. Third War Loan cam
paign will be five days of spec
ial dog racing at the Multnomah
stadium in Portland, with the
committee receiving the net pro.
ceeds of mutuel wagering, net
proceeds of concession sales, and
net proceeds of program sales.

Mrs. Earl Wilson
Resigns Chamber of
Commerce Post
Mrs. Earl Wilson has resigned
as assistant secretary of the
chamber of commerce here. She
hat held this position for the
past two and a half years.
As yet, a successor has not
been named to fill the post, It
was announced by Earl Rey
nolds, secretary of the chamber
of commerce.
Germans Prepare
Defenses in Balkans
ANKARA, Aug. 12 (Delayed)
P) Information from the Bal
kans today reported the Ger
mans ware throwing up defense
fortifications on the north banks
of the Sava river in Yugoslavia
which joins the Danube north
of Belgrade.
It was believed the Germans
were preparing secondary de
fense lines through the Balkans,
should they be forced to fall
back due to Italy's cnpitulatlon
or an allied invasion of the Bui
kani, The Sava river, the Danube
and the Carpathian mountains
form natural defense line for
the northern Balkans.
So far In this war, we have
taken as many prisoners as there
were men in the regular army
