sulted primarily from the en
trance of students Into the labor
force with the close of the
school year.

above the previous high record
ed in July and August of last
year.

Swimming Is believed by
many to be the most healthful
exercise there Is, the best body
builder. The reason for this is
that there is no "tearing down"
of muscles in swimming like
there is in golf, tennis, football
and other sports.
John Klrby, of the Klamath
Heating plant, D. O. Hood witn
Columbia Utilities company, the
city council, the mayor, and the
city attorney met Thursday to
discuss problems arising from
corrosion in pipes, steam escap
ing from manholes and the soot
problem.
This group has under consid
eration an idea that they bellcvo
will improve tho soot situation
and they are also attempting to
make a correction in the prob
lem of escaping steam in the
city.
Labor, War Conditions
However these corrections
cannot be mado until labor aijd
war conditions permit. Also it
Is difficult to get material.
In a report from Gcorg0 H.
Flagg, commissioner of public
utilities for Oregon, it is found
that ho has completed his part
of the three-way agreement
reached early in June regard
ing the "corrosion" and "black
snow" as related to the opera
tions of the Klamath Steam
Heating company. The report
was compiled by Professor
George W. Gleason of Oregon
State college.
In an effort to compromise
the differences between the city
and the heating utility, three
studies were to.be made. Inves
tigations are yet to be complet
ed by the city and the heating
company.
Pure Water
Briefly, Professor Gleeson
found that the well water used
in the boilers at the heating
company Is of about the same
degree of purity as surface water
from the surrounding hills, and
that It does not carry enough
sulphide of' chloride content to
be harmful to sanitation.
Considerable sulphate was
found, however, In the under
ground hot water flowing down
Spring street.
Equipment Needed
The professor recommends
some additional equipment be
added, such as a deaerating feed
water heater, and that numerous
vents be installed.
He says It la not unusual for
steam to come from the man
holes, and that such a condition
is often noticeable at such places
as Portland and San Francisco.
The rats are beginning to leave
the sinking ship. One has left
already. 8th Air Force Chap
