Pinworm Infection Needs
Treatment by Physician
The pinworm Is a parasite of
human beings only. The inci
dence of infection is surprising
ly high. Examinations of very
large numbers of persons have
shown from IS to 40 per cent
of the people examined to be
infected. The infection Is dif
fuse throughout the country.
Although the highest Incidence
is found In congested, long-established
residential sections, it
Is by no means limited to any
social or economic group. If one
member of a family is known
to be infected, it is almost the
rule to find other children or
one or coin parents aiso Har
boring the parasite.
The pinworm is a parasite
having unusual and strange
habits. The egg are laid on tne
perianal akin at night when the
host Is sleeping. The female
worm then shrivels up and may
droo from the body Into the bed
clothing. When the egg is dis
charged, it already contains an
embryo, which is fully devel
oped and infective within six
hours. The source of infection
is the ingestion of these eggs.
SYMPTOMS VARY OREATLY
The symptom of pinworm
infestation vary in degree from
a complete absence of recog
nized symptoms, to intense itch
ing in the region of the anus,
loss of appetite, Irritability,
restlessness, and diarrhoea. Pin-
worms are known to enter the

If you'd been listening to your
radio one evening a few weeks
ago, you might have heard a
news dispatch, telling of another
RAF raid deep into Nazi-held
France. This time the target
was Le Creusot, site of the great
Schneider armament works.
At least that was the main
target. But here was something
that caught my ear just a sen
tence to this effect: "Some of the
bombers veered off the course to
; strike at the Montchanin power
station, which supplies electric
power for the Schneider arma
ment works and other industries
in the vicinity."
A power station! There you
are again proof of the supreme
importance of electric power to
the production of weap
ons and war supplies!
But back of that story
there must have been
another story a hu
man story of gladness
and gratitude on the
ffl
pari of the enslaved workers
in . that power station. For
them that bombing must have
been a liberation. Even though
some of them may have died in it,
they must have made the sacri
fice willingly, for the sake of
choking off vital supplies for the
oppressors.
Well, that's the Nazi system
Take a man, put him in chains,
prod a gun into his back, and
make him work.
We like it the other way. Take
a man, pay him a decent wage
for working hours, reward him
for his initiative and skill, give
him pleasant working conditions
and good tools to do his job with.

The control of pinworm In
fection is extremely difficult.
The tendency to scratch the Ir
ritated perianal skin deposits
the eggs beneath the fingernail,
and eventually they may be
carried to the mouth. The eggs
are so light that they may be
carried by air currents and
thereby be transported to dis
tant object. They are usually
to be found in the dust in hous
es where the infection is
present.
The persistence of the Infec
tion, despite treatment, is to be
explained by constant re-infection
from these sources. The
pinworm egg is capable of sur
viving as long as 10 days on the
skin, and is resistant to ordi
nary temperature changes as
well as the usual household dis
infectants. Therefore, hygienic
measures are inadequate to. sup
press tne infection.
TREATING THE INFECTION
The treatment .of pinworms
by means of gentian violet, a
chemical agent, is highly effec
tive, but must be continued
longer than the survival period
of the eggs, and administered
to all infected persons in the
family.
The recognition of the para
site should always precede any
treatment. Each member of the
family should be examined, re
gardless of the a b s e n c e of
symptoms, and the treatment
should be supervised by a phy
sician.

WASHINGTON, Aug. 11 (IP)
Secretary of State Hull denied
today that Undersecretary Sum
ner Welles is to receive a roving
assignment and be replaced by
Norman Armour, United States
ambassador to Argentine.
Asked about the published re
ports, Hull said this newest story
was a recurrence of similar re
ports circulated in recent years
and on each occasion denied.

Holds Recognition
Of French Committee
WASHINGTON, Aug. 11 VP)
Undersecretary of State Sumner
Welles indicated that the state
department is not ready to an
nounce recognition of the French
committee of national liberation.
Asked about reports from Al
giers that the United States and
Great Britain had agreed to rec
ognize the committee as the
trustee of French Interests until
its armies landed In France,
Welles said there was nothing
new on that matter.
The latest twin-engined flying
boat in the navy is the Martin
