ing her parents this week. Helen
Ernst, Berkeley, who at one time
lived here with her parents, was

ity. Miss Barks is living in the
Ernst -home at present. Ernst,
one of the early homesteaders.

Mr. and Mrs. Jerome Keefer
had as their house guest for two
days this week, Keefer s brother,
Lieutenant Commander James
Keefer who has been at school
for two months in Yorktown,
Va., and Mrs. Keefer. Keefer was
in command of the minesweep
er "Cuckatoo at the time of
Pearl Harbor and from here
went to Portland. He was accom
panied to Portland by his wife.
Mr. and Mrs. Jerome Keefer
will leave about the middle of
August for Roseville, Calif., 16
miles north of Sacramento where
Keefer will serve as principal
of one of three large city schools.
He served as principal of the
Tulelake elementary school for
eight years, resigning at the end
of the spring term.
Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Thomas
have had as recent house guests,
Mrs. Thomas' sister, -Mrs. Mar
ian Baldwin, Detroit, .. Mich.
whom she has not seen for 20
years, and her father,- John M.
Haley, New York City importer.
Mr. Haley accompanied by Mrs
Haley, who spent most of the
past year here with Mr. and Mrs.
Thomas, left this week for Port
land. Mrs.' Wyoma Morgan, Marys-
ville, daughter of George Smith,
is spending several days here as
the guest of Mr. and Mrs. Henry
Smith. She returned to Tulelake
with Mayor- and Mrs. Roden-
berger, who were south recently
for the christening of a medium
tank. "City of Tulelake," at
Camp Beale, near Marysville.
The tank was one of 343 named
for California cities.

of Susanville, Calif., are spend
ing several weeks with their
grandparents, Mr. and Mrs.
Frank Bramwell.
Mrs. Chet Eyers and son, John,
and Guy Mundlin spent the
weekend at Vancouver, Wash.,
on business.
Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth J. Bram
well spent the week with his
parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank

friends with bridge at her home
on Wednesday. High scores were
won by Mrs. Owen Pepple and

day. Mrs. Ben Reid and Mr. and

an all-night trek to Bryant
mountain east of Malin. The
trip was made on horseback.
Included in the party were Bet
ty Kilpatrick and Iva Jane Has
kins and Camp Fire members
Geraldine McKendree, Betty
Turner, Peggy Farrell, Joan and
Lois Lee Kandra, Laura Lou
Hill and Katherine WiJson.
The girls who call themselves
the Commandos have been ac
tive in assisting with the civil
ian defense program, in collect
ing silk hose, phonograph rec
ords and now have a project
under way for collecting waste
fat. Betty Turner is their cap
tain. They assisted also with the
Legion auxiliary poppy sale last
May.
Merrill Pioneer
Dies in Ashland
MERRILL Word reached
here this week of the death of
Walter Purdy, former resident
and pioneer of the Merrill dis
trict who passed away at Ash
land, July1 11, following a lin
gering illness.
Mr. Purdy came to Merrill
about 44 years ago settling in
the Adams Point district on land
later purchased by Walter Robi
son who still lives near the or
iginal homesite. The family left
here some time ago to make its
home in Ashland.
He is survived by his wife,
Fanny, a son, Owen, in defense
work in California, and a
daughter, Mrs. Ruth Rosenstiel,
Corvallis.

George Butler of Ivory Pine
company went into California
on business last week and re
turned by way of Sparks, Nev.,
and brought Mrs. Butler home
with him. She has been visiting
her sisters in Sparks and Reno
the past month.
Bert Milligan from Bend vis
ited with friends here this week
before leaving for the army.
Bonny Stone from Prineville
and formerly of Bly, was the
guest of Lois Osburn last week.
Mrs. Myers returned Tuesday
to her home in Portland after
a visit with her daughter, Betty
Dyer.
Miss Madeline Crane recent
ly returned to Bly from San
Francisco, where she had been
working for the 'Red Cross. She
is now employed in the office
of Crane's mill.

heit of Jackson, Calif., were vis
itors of Howard's parents, Mr.

decorations for meritorious
achievement during 100 hours
of flight missions in the south
west Pacific was awarded Sgt.
Lowell F. Smead, formerly of
Paisley. Smead was with the
American forces in the battle
of the Solomons.
The Purple Heart was award
ed posthumously to Sgt. Alonzo
F. Atkinson, infantry, who sac
rificed his life in the defense of
his country. Atkinson was from
Lakeview, and was killed in the
battle of Attu.
Dorris
Arthur Dokey, RM 3c, visit
ed last weekend at the home of
his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Clay
ton Green. He returned to his
station at San Francisco Mon
day. Mr. and Mrs. L. C. Lilly and
niece, Frances Green, journeyed
to Bishop, Calif., Tuesday. They
returned to Dorris Friday with
Mrs. Lilly s father.

trip Tuesday evening to south

Work began this week on
painting the Dorris Southern
Pacific depot, freight warehouse
and section houses. A Klamath
Falls contractor is in charge of

Mrs. Elmer Hurlburt left
Monday with her son Jackie by
train to visit her husband at an
army camp at Williamsburg,
Va. She planned to stop at Ok
lahoma City, Okla., to visit rel
atives. The allies must recognize that
no matter what nations or boun
daries are restored or created,
the Europe of the future must
not be divided into separate eco

New Pine Creek
Al Lang, high grade prospec
tor and miner, returned last
Monday evening to work his
Big Pine claim for about a
month. Then he expects to re
turn to the broom factory where
he works in Oakland. The plant
closed down for 30 days await
ing the arrival of an $11,000
shipment of broom-corn which
is slow in coming. Lang enjoys
coming back to high grade for
the change of work is invigor
ating and restful. He said he
had missed only two days at the
factory since last November.
Mr. and Mrs. Tom Roberts re
turned last week from Ashland,
where Mrs. Roberts was taking
treatments for arthritis. She is
feeling much better, Mr. Rob
erts reports. The latter expects
to start work on his Consolidat
ed mine diggings soon.
Nineteen members of the
Happy Hour club met at the
home of Mrs. Delbert Clund a
week ago last Tuesday. An en
joyable time was spent, and re
freshments consisted of a straw
berry roll and cream and cof
fee. The strawberries were from
her garden.
Ensign Gene Deter arrived
home last Friday after his par
ents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Deter,
had gone to Klamath for him.
He could only stay a day or so
and left on Monday for Med
ford where he was to take a
plane "for San Diego.
