Governor Earl Snell has issu
ed a proclamation which re
quires that all people who enter
the Fremont national forest or
adjoining forested land in the
national forest protective area
to follow these rules:
1. To refrain from smoking
while traveling in such areas,
except on paved or surfaced
highways.
2. To secure a permit issued
by a forest ranger or fire war
den for building a campfire
other than at improved, desig
nated and posted campgrounds.
3. To have as a part of his or
her equipment when using
campfircs. except when travel
ing as a pedestrian, andor
camping at improved, designat
ed and posted campgrounds,
tools as specified by the forester
suitable for extinguishing fires.
This proclamation shall be
effective from July 1, 1943, and
shall remain in full force and
effect until December 31, 1943,
unless revoked sooner.
According to Ed Cliff, super
visor of the Fremont forest,
campers will be required to
have an axe, shovel and a
bucket or water container of at
least one gallon capacity be
fore being issued a campfire
permit Campfire permits can
be obtained from district rang
ers'' headquarters at Bly, Lake
view, Paisley or Silver Lake
and at the Dairy Creek guard
station. The forest protective
agencies urge that the public
conscientiously observe these
rules and do everything possible
to assist in keeping fires out of
the forest this year. ,
Gruber Trial Opens

was banned from the coastal area
by the western defense com
mand, opened in federal court to
day. ..
The government seeks to re
voke his American citizenship,
charging in its complaint that he
never renounced his allegiance to
Germany as he agreed to do un
der oath when granted his cer
tificate of naturalization in 1937.

liam H. Hedlund said it is the
first of several similar suits to
be tried this month and that ac-
- tivitieg of the German-American
bund in this area are expected to
pf discloed.

Klamath's famous Captain Jack,
the bright-plumaged banty roos
ter who has sent his clarion
voice across the state of Oregon
to "Buy Bonds Buy Bonds."
The gallant little warrior,
whose name -is reminiscent of
this county's colorful history, has
been kept busy for months try
ing to find a permanent abode
but still Oregon's cities bid for
him with bond auctions running
up and up at Rotary clubs, Ki
wanis gatherings. Lions meetings
and via the air waves over radio.
After a long day's successful
work he returns to a lonely
cage, with no attractive "little
woman" to flutter pleasantly
about him and no approving fem
inine voice to say, "Well done!"
A feature of July s 5300.000
bond drive shall be to provide a
feminine mate for the captain, it
was decided by two of this city's
outstanding women s organiza
tions, the Business and Profes
sional Women's club and the
Soroptimist club, working as one
unit to provide a fund specified
for the purchase of "eggs" for
the Klamath Pelican bomber.
Each women's organization
throughout the entire county is
asked to enter a candidate for
Captain Jack's sweetheart.
Qualifications Each candidate
must be attractive; must -be a
bantam and outstanding. If she
hasn't beauty, she MUST have
personality; if her plumage isn't
as gorgeous as his, she must be
one of those fems who can listen
to his exploits with an air of
well, girls, you know what it !
takes. i

condition as of June 30th, pub
lished elsewhere in this paper,
United States National Bank,
which has ono of its important
units in this city, shows another
all time high in deposits of
$328,571,624.97 and resources of
$342,266,994.93. This represents
the phenomenal gain against do
posits of a year ago this date of
$208,105,063.48, or an upward
surge of $120,466,561.49, or a
rate of gain of 10 million dol
lars per month.
Resources increased In the 12
months from $220,822,120.90 to
$342,266,994.93, a gain of $121,
444.874.03. Included in tho re
sources is the capital structure
which now exceeds 12 million
dollars.

WASHINGTON. July 6 (IP)
The war production board today
ordered newspaper publishers to
reduce further their consump
tion of newsprint during 1943 s
third quarter. It ranges up to
five per cent for large users.
The additional five per cent re
duction does not apply to the
first 25 tons for newspapers us
ing less than 500 tons a quarter.
This provision, WPB said, is de
ligned to aid the operation of
smaller newspapers.
OBITUARY
STONEWALL HECOCTA .
Stonewall Hecocta, a resident
of Sprague River for 32 years
and a life-long resident of Klam
ath county, passed ' away in
Klamath Falls on July 4, 1943.
. The deceased was born at Beatty,
Ore., and was aged 53 years
when called. Besides his wife,
Ellen, of Sprague River, Ore., he
is survived by two daughters,
Anita Hecocta, WACs, Daytona
Beach, Fla.; and Thelma HOodof
Chiloquin, Ore.; one brother,
Samuel Hecocta of Beatty, and
two nieces and one nephew. The
remains rest at Ward's Klamath
Funeral home, 925 High street,
where friends may call. Funer
al arrangements will . be an
nounced Wednesday.
