EDSQN FOULKE
Edson Louis Foulke, 65, one of
the last of the eariy day cattle
men of southern Oregon and
northern California, died lata
Thursday afternoon in ' the
Yreka, California hospital, ac
cording to word received here.
Mr, Foulke, who has run cattle
from this section since his early
boyhood, was one ot the color
ful figures of the stockman a
world. Ha numbered among hii
friends famous writers, movie
stars, prominent Californtans
and others who have gathered
for years at the Foulke home
on the Pacific highway, near
Gazelle. Some 18 years ago,
Mr, and Mrs, Foulke moved to
Yreka to make their home.
Edson L, Foulke, well known
to Klamath cattle men, wa born
at the old family ranch home
at Gazelle, son of Lewis M,
Foulke Sr., and Susan Elizabeth
Edson Foulke, He derived his
given name from the old Edson
family. The original home has
burned twice. In 1805, he was
married to Blanche Taylor, a
daughter of California pioneers.
Began Early
When, he was 17 yean of age,
Edson Foulke had made a name
for himself aa a shrewd cattle
man, with an eye for fine beef
stock. He bought his first cat
tle from William "Bill" Kttfr
redge of Klamath Fails, back
In the spring of 1885, when he
paid a visit to the Kittredge
holdings at the old Davis ranch
south of Dorrii, Calif,
From that time, Edson Foulke
played a prominent part in
southern Oregon cattle growing.
He bought stock around Paisley,
Summer Lake, and Lakeview,
driving the beef over Topsy
grade and Bail mountain to the
vast Foulke holdinga in the
Shasta valley. Here the animals
were fattened and shipped by
rail to the San Francisco mar
ket. The Edson Foulke company,
organized in 1853, played
prominent part in western cattle
history. It was in continuous
operation for more than 90 yean
and finally dissolved in the
spring ot 1843, The company first
canto Into being when it was
started by the Edson brothers
who came to thla country by
wagon train from the middle
west. At the time of Edson
Foulke'a passing, the cattleman
operated stock west of Dorris
and in the Shasta valley hold
ings. Death came to Mr, Foulke fol
lowing a two years' Mines, ag
gravated by a heart condition.
Funeral services will be held in
Yreka Saturday at 2:30 p. m,,
frienda here are advised. Mr,
Foulke is survived by his wife,
Blanche, one son, Edson Jr., of
Yreka, two daughters, Mrs. Wil
liam (Katherine) Caiiff of
Newell, Calif., and Mrs. Don
(Elizabeth) Epperson of Salinas,
Calif., and one brother, Lewis
Foulke ot Gazelle. The daugh
ters wera visiting here at tho
Horace E, Gels home Thursday
when word of their father's
passing reached them. They
left immediately for Yreka but
failed to reach their father's bed
side before his death. The
Foulke interests will continue
to be operated by the only son,
Edson Jr.
William Kittredge, who had
been a close friend ot the Foulke
family for more than 50 years,
had this to say in tribute to his
associate.
"Edson Foulke was one of the
old stockmen, splendid man,
and a fine gentleman. When I
first came here in 1895, I sold
Edson the first cattle he ever
bought, down at the old Davis j
ranch south of Dorris, At one
time Edson's family handled I
practically all the cattle taken I
out of southern Oregon, and Ed
son himself was in charge of j
all the buying. His death is a
shock to me, and to his many 1
friends,"

RANCH OF SERRUYS
Sale ot the William Serruys
ranch on Airway avenue, six
miles south of Klamath Fails, to
Marvin K. Lucas, Klamath Falls
merchant, was announced this
week. i
Serruys purchased the ranch
from Lewis Kandra five years
ago and has operated a stock
ranch since that time. The ranch
is composed of SOS acres, Lucas
will take possession of the place f
July 1. Mr. and Mrs, Serruys'
will return to Klamath Falls and
will be at their former residence,
