Fire Spotters
WALLA WALLA, Juno 17 (P)
Airnluno pilots on routine flights
from the Wnlla Walla air field
will act as voluntary grain fire
spotters this summer as ono step
in a program to reduce fire dam
age to crops.
The plan was described yester
day at a meeting of civilian de
fense coordinators and city and
county offlclnls.
Washington is the first state to
spend any money teaching its
farmers how to control grain
fires, said L. L, Burgundcr, Spo
kano, chief of rural fire preven
tion and control in the state civil

Trapped 65 feet underground In
a sewer for more than 13 hours,
Gordon Tcmpuny, 54-year-old
construction foreman, was res
cued today by desperately-tolling
city firemen.
Suffering no ill effects from

Jokingly told rcacucra, "I had a
good time." Aa he emerged
from tho sewer, his wifo rushed
to embrace him.
Tcmpany is employed by a
construction company engaged in
building' a sewer at E. 37th
street and Kingsbury Run. Ho
dashed into a watertight con
crete compartment lust night to
escape drowning as water rushed
into the construction project.
Fourteen other men employed
on the project fled to nearest
exits while Tcmpany took refuge
in the compartment, about 600
feet from the closest exit. For
ten hours he kept in touch with
rescuers by telephone, then the
communications circuit went
dead,
