Stocks underwent another mod'
crate drubbing from profit-tak
erg in today's market although
most lowers put up a fairly re
spectable defensive .battle.
Further slipping tendencies
were evident at the start. At the
worst minus signs ran to 2 points
or so. Offerings never were un
duly pressing and, with dealings
slow at intervals, a little sup
port arrived after mid-day.
Transfers were around 1,100,000
shares.
Excuses for cashing In on the
-long forward swing varied. Cited
were: The desire to trim com
mitments in preparation for the
expected all-out European inva
sion; skepticism over tax and la
bor outlooks, and doubts regard
ing the confused situation in the
Argentine.
On the offside most of the day

Pete, the Pet Deer. When
He Returns From Wandering

Pete is a black tail deer that
has been raised at the home of
Mr. and Mrs. George Rowdcn at
Fish lake. For two consecutive
winters he has taken leave when
the first snows were drifting
down over the high mountains.
Two years ago Mrs. Rowdcn,
whose husband is associated
with the Medford irrigation dis
trict, mourned loss of her pet,
wondering as the snow deepened
if Pete found plenty of browse.
He had been used to a nibble of
sugar, an occasional cracker and
the run of the woods about the
house for four years.
He fraternized on moonlight
nights with his wild friends, al
ways returning each morning for
his daily inspection of the house,
his bell tinkling from room to
room.
The winter wore on and all
; hope of seeing him again fled.

pines and one day word came
that Pete was on the slopes
above Upper Klamath lake.
Mrs. Rowden went at once to
the location where he had been
seen and, after searching .for
hours, heard his bell. Her call
brought him loping to her side.
She led him to a pick-up truck,
loaded him in and once more he
frolicked along the shores of
Fish lake.
Last November his . mistress
went to Ashland for the winter.
Two days later he again disap
peared. In March the Rowdens
trekked in over six miles of
snow covered road.
No bell or sharp stamping feet
greeted their arrival and once
again they gave up hope of see
ing Pete.
But, somewhere', perhaps be
neath the overhanging branches
of his pine bed, Pete felt the urge
to go home and. a few days ago,
he returned. This time, however,
he found competition in the
hearts of his family. Snug in a
bassinette before the big living
room fireplace was a new baby
boy. . .

Cherry Fly Out

Bug wntchers, who have to be
as faithful as airplane spotters,
report the first of the cherry
fruit flics, at the Oregon State
college experiment station. Cher
ry growers have been warned to
attack with sprays or dust im
mediately. Flies began emerging from the
ground last weekend, S. C. Jones,
entomologist, said. They begin
laying eggs in about 10 days.
The only way to protect cherries
is to kill these flics before they
lay their eggs, as the eggs are
deposited under the cherry skin
hence there is no chance to poi
son the newly hatched larva as
is done with apple worms.
