- JACKSONVILLE, Fla., ()
The Florida association of com
mercial organization executives
has adopted a resolution asking
Secretary of the Treasury Mor
genthau to have a square hole
punched in the center of the new
white penny "thereby saving a
lot of scrap metal and the souls
of men from perdition."
The organization contended
that the new coin is "filling the
function of a counterfeit dime,"
being generally passed off on the
aged and dim-sighted. . '

WASHINGTON, June 4 MP)
Resentment against some en
forcement officers in the field
strengthened senate support to
day for legislation to require con
firmation of thousands of federal
officials making $4300 or more
a year.
Senator Bone (D-Wash.) report
ed hearing of a number of in
stances where feeling against
OPA and WPB representatives
had "lined up votes" for the
measure, which President Roose
velt has denounced as "a tragic
mistake."
"In some states," Bone said,
"some of these officials are open
ly critical of members of con
gress and are seeking to blame
them for . their methods . of en
forcement, and the allocations
and restrictions,"
Most outspoken opponent of
the bill, offered by Senator Mc
Kellnr (D-Tenn.), was Senator
Hatch (D-N.M.) who- said ho
would seek a roll call vote today
on an amendment to exempt of-'
ficials of the Tennessee valley
authority.
"Directors of the TVA are now
subject to senate confirmation,"
Hatch told newsmen. "I'm
afraid this bill would play havoc
with TVA's merit system for its
employes."
