The National league la ex

this year tho Brooklyn Dodgers

The Dodgors and Cardinals
know they are tho only two
teams in the league with any rea

they are counting tht games they
play against each other this
spring Just as crucial as tha ones
that will come at tha close of
tho campaign.
After dividing a four-game
aeries at Brooklyn last month
and a doubleheader In St. Louis
Monday, they waded into each
other again yesterday like their
lives depended on the outcome
and at the end of 12 Innings of
almost unbelievable baseball,
the raging Redbirds had an 11-0
victory and were within half of
a game of first place.
The two teams made 33 hits,

passed the lead back and fourth
like a hot tip on the second

Finally it was a two-run
homer by Harry (Little Dixie)
Walker, his first of the season,
that decided the game.
But it was miraculous field
ing play by Shortstop Martin
Marion that won for the Cards as
much aa Walker's wallop. In the
top halt of the twelfth the Dod
gers loaded the basea with one
out and Plnchhitter Dee Moore
smashed Harry Brecheen's first
pitch to Marion's left. The tall
shortstop made a dive and actu
ally stabbed the ball after it had
hopped put him. He made a
double play out of it. The loss
waa charged to Rube Melton.
The two rivals are ticketed for
the final game of the series to
night and on the result will' de
pend whether the Dodgers or the
Cardinals are in first place to
morrow. Pittsburgh beat the Boston
Braves 9-4 In 14 innings and the
Cincinnati Reds stopped the New
York Giants 3-1 to set up a triple
tie for third place between the
Reds, Breves and Pirates.

COOPERATIVE
CANNING
COOKERS
URGED
Cooperative use of pressure
cookers for canning purposes
this year Is strongly urged by
Wlnnifred K. Gillen, chairman
of the county nutrition commit
tee for defense and county home
demonstration agent. The short
age of pressure canners la acute
and only a few will be available
for purchase this year, she says.
"Though the first peas are
Just beginning to poke their
heads through the soil, victory
gardeners are looking forward to
th harvest and the problem of
canning, drying and freezing the
products for future use," said
Mrs. Gillen. "I suggest the for
mation of canning circles, each
consisting of six or mora fami
lies cooperating in the use of one
cooker. Women in the circle can
not only take turns using the
canners but can also help one
another to get vegetables ready
to can, thus making the task
lighter and more pleasant for
all."
Such canning circles are by no
means an original idea, Mrs. Gil
len explains, as families in many
of our communities last year
shared their pressure cookers
with those who could not buy
them for themselves.
"Anyone wno has a pressure
canner to share will help the
whole cause of food for victory
by notifying the county nutri
tion chairman, telephone 8151.
We will help see that every can
ner does its full share toward
victory, with a minimum of 'ab
senteeism'." Horn From Trip Dr. A. A.
