Children Killed as German
Raiders Hit Sunday School

TOWN, May 31 (P) A six-foot
carving of the crucifixion still
hung over the pile of rubble that
wait the Parish church of this
popular peacetime resort until
German raiders wrecked It on
Sunday, killing at least 18 chil
dren and three Sunday school
teachers.
The crucifix was suspended
from the archway, which be
sides the steeple, was the only
part of the building left stand
ing. While rescue workers still dug
In the debris in search of vic
tims, the German radio broad
cast a communique on the raid
which said, "fast German bomb
ers raided harbor towns on the
English south and southeast
coast and dropped bombs of
heavy caliber on installations of
military importance."
Besides the dead so far count
ed, 14 children were seriously
injured and 10 slightly hurt. An
undetermined number of chil
dren and teachers are still miss
ing. In other neighborhoods more
men, women and children were
killed and injured as bombs
from 15 raiders crashed down in
the town's worst raid.
On the gates of the wrecked
church there are still notices an
nouncing that a collection at yes
terday's service was for the
bishops' fund for damaged
churches.
Not a single person in the
church escaped death or injury.
Frank ' Perrott's 12-year-old
twins, Michael and Mary, went
to the service dressed in their
best clothes. Last night he saw
Mnry's body brought out of the
wreckage.
