as much as 1 cents In wheat into
losses of more than a cent.
The early upturn was associ
ated with the bullish interpreta
tion placed on the government
crop report Issued after the close
yesterday, but grain men said
more favorable conditions since
the compilation of the report led
to the belief that the winter
wheat crop might be increased'
by several million bushels over
the May estimate. ,
Weakness In rye helped to ac
celerate the downturn in wheat.

With four members from silver
states concurring, the senate
banking committee approved
unanimously today a bill author
izing the sale of treasury-held
silver for domestic purposes at
71.11 cents an ounce.
The committee's action repre
sented a compromise between
view of tho so-called silver bloo
and New England senator who
have sought release of treasury
silver at 50 cents an ounce for
manufacturing purposes.
Senator Moloney (D-Conn.),
said the bill would be reported
to the senate tomorrow.
"It will be a non-controversial
bill, I believe," ho told reporters,
"and we should have no trouble
bringing it up and passing It."

This year the legion of homo ennners

with tho canning season just abend,
it's nono too soon to start planning
now for this food conservation cvant.
Plan Your Canning Budget
Of courso, tho amount of home canning
you do will depend upon the size of
your family. It is just as wasteful to
can too much as it is to pass up the can
ning season altogether. A fair allow
ance for tho overage person is 100
quarts of canned fruits and vegetables
a year. This figure includes both homo
and commercially canned foods. Divido
that 100 quarts in thirds, ono-third for
fruits and berries, one-third for toma
toes and tomato juice, and one-third
for vegetables with a largo portion in
leafy ond green vegetables, and you
have n rough estimate of your family's
needs for tho yoor.
This allownnco doesn't includo jellies,'
pickles, relishes and thoso extras that
pop up tho menu the year around.
. Tako Inventory
Check your canning equipment first.
A large preserving kettle is a "must"
for fruits and berries and tomatoes.
Unless you have a pressure cooker or
can borrow or rent ono or share with
your neighbor who has ono, just forget
about canning vegetables, meat, poul
try and fish. It is folly to even attempt
to can these things in any other way.
Jars, Lids, cfhd Glasses
Assemble all your jars that can bo used
for sealing. Some mayonnoiso and pea
nut butter jars and other jars can be
used if thoy tako the standard sizo self
scaling lids. Check tho mouths of the
jars and discard all thoso with chips,
cracks, or flaws, for such defects mako
perfect sealing impossible. If you've
half gallon jars, plan to use them for
tomatoes and fruits. Thoy arc too largo
for the proper penetration of heat for
other foods.
Glasses and jars which can't bo sealed
can be used for jam and scaled with
paraffin.
Storage Space
Bo sure there's enough storage space
for your canned goods before you plan,
too much canning, for if you haven't a
place to keep them, don't can foods
will spoilt Thoy should bo stored in a
dark, cool place. It is not wise to keep
them in the kitchen becaueo of the boat
from cooking.
Chopping List and Shop Early
Include commercial pectins, pickling
spices, paraffin, self-scaling lids and
added canning jars on your preparatory
shopping list, as well as anything clso
you may need.
