cess of this method deponds on
controlling the large numbers of
soed-eutlng rodents that are
present throughout this area.
Evidently theso rodents aro al
ways hungry, for earlier trials
of direct seeding have failed due
to the complete loss of lends to
the appetltea of these little ani
mals. The Modoc council of Boy
Bcouta of America requested two
mall-icnle experiments In fores
try as work projects for tho
scouts About 3000 two-year-old
trees were planted along Green
springs highway, and Immedi
ately opposite this planting site
400 seed spots were set out to
teat the feaslbtlty of this method
of establishing forests.
Direct seeding plots are for
pondoroaa pine only, but tho
trial planting Included Douglas
fir and Austrian pine, as well as
ponderosa. About 30 scouts par
ticipated In the experiments.

through the state nursery at Sa
lem. It Is the Intention of Weyer
haeuser company to continue
these amall-scale experiments in
seeding and planting until feas
ible field methods of regenera
tion are discovered, company of

Mr. and Mra. Rachel Young re
ceived a telegram Sunday from
the war department atatlng that
their ton, PFC George E. Young
was a prisoner of war of the
Japanese government In the
Philippine islands. George
served in the national guard
eight months prior to entering
the army In May, 1041, when he
became a member of the Infan
try. Following the fall of Bataan
In April, last year, the Lakevlew
boy was reported missing In ac
tion, and the word received Sun
day was the first since that time.
Although being held a prisoner
of the Jnps Is certainly nothing
pleasant to think about, the fact
that George Is alive is good newa
to his parents and frlcnda.
