and women serving our coun
try In tho armod forces, the
mombors of Zlon Lutheran
church will, on Sunday, partici
pate In a nationwide effort to
raise $500,000 to keep the
Lutheran church with 1U mem
bers who are serving the na
tion as soldiers, sailors, marines
and nurses.
Through its army and navy
commission, the Evangelical
Lutheran church operates a
comprehensive program tor
mon and women In the armed
forces. Parents and wives, homo
pastors, tho commission office,
service and contact key pastors,
chaplains, all work together in
a co-ordinated program to give
mon and women under the
colors opportunity to hear the
Word and partako of tho Sacra
ment, wherever possible.
The government pays the
sulary of our 160 chaplains.
Tho church, howevor, must
provldo them,- as well as the
430 service and key pastors,
with materials to enable them
to carry out their ministry to
Lutheran men and women. The
commission must supply each
man and woman In the armed
forces who is a member of tho
Lutheran church with a service
prayer book, directory ot key
pastors, a Lutheran metal Iden
tification tag and other Chris
tian material. The chaplains
must bo supplied with commun
ion wore, service manuals,
tracts, prayer books and other
material.
To each overseas chaplain a
$50 expense fund is made avail
able for tho benefit of our
Lutheran men and women.
Service and porlsh centers num
bering 94 are operated in con
Junction with the National
Lutheran council. The commis
sion furnishes name and ad
dress cards, tracts and folders,
and In Memorlam scrolls for
presentation to the bereaved to
every pastor of the church.

Anniversary Celebration
The fifteenth anniversary of
the organization ot the Congre

closed on Monday evening, May
3, with a dinner In the social
hall. On Sunday morning during
the Sundoy school hour Rev. T.
Davis Preston showed moving
pictures taken in 1931 and 1032
at the summer vacation school
which was started by the Con
gregational church here and
these pictures were shown again
Monday after the dinner and
program.
At the Sunday morning ser
vice Rev. Perry F. Schrock, dis
trict superintendent, preached.
His topic was "The Old Oregon
Trail and the New." Patricia'
Brown was the guest soloist. On
Sunday evening Rev. Nelson F.
Cole, pastor when the church
was organized, was the speaker,
and Mrs. Vernon Kuykendall
soloist.
Monday afternoon In the social
hall the ladies of the church gave
a tea In honor of Mrs. Cole and
Mrs. Preston, and the dinner fol
lowed at 6:30 p. m. About eighty
five attended the dinner, the hall
being filled almost to capacity.

His subject was "The Church
Yesterday, Today and Tomor
row" and he paid tribute to three
of the faithful workers in the
early days ot the church, Rev.
John W. Bryant, Mrs. E. L.
French and Fay Morris, all now
gone. He touched upon some of
the trials and tribulations of his
pastorate in the old barn on
Wantland avenue, and told of the
building of the present church,
then went on to speak ot the
greater work in store for the
churches in general today and
tomorrow. Rev. Eugene HaynesH
closed the service as it is closed
in the summer camp at Camp
Adams by congregational sing
ing of "Auld Lang Syne" and
"Blest Be the Tie That Binds."

the 10 o'clock service. Each
mother attending the service
will be suitably remembered

ters in our armed forces are

'The Gospel of Motherhood"
will be the theme of the morn
ing message.
Bible school at 11 o'clock at
which time the' superintendent,
Frances Smith, will also pre
sent something special for the
mothers attending this part of
the service. Betty Williams and
Lester Tucker will assist in this
service.
High School Young People's
fellowship at 6:30 p. m. with
Mrs. Wheatley the teacher. '
"Mother's Apron Strings"
will be the theme for the eve
ning service. The service opens
with congregational singing of
the old Gospel hymns promptly
at 8 o'clock. The program will
also include a reading, "Dyna
mic Faith," by( Dr. Sarah Smith;
vocal duet, Rose and Frances
Smith; recitation, "A Mother's
Creed," Mrs. J. A. O'Neal; a
