emergency fact finding panel an
nounced today it had failed to
settle the dispute between 900,

ers and the nation's principal
railroads over union demands for
higher wages.

ity of Michigan, chairman of the
panel of three members who
have been hearing the ease since
March 1, said It had "made every
reasonable effort'' to settle the
controversy,
The panel now will retire In
to executive session, the chair
man said, and prepare its report
for submission' to President
Roosevelt. Seven thousand pages
of testimony have been takon
at the hearing and Sharfman
said he was unable to estimate
when the report would be ready.
In past disputes the parties
have abided by the findings of
the emergency fact-finding panel
appointed by the president.

Cascade
The weather at Cascade Sum
mit this spring has been cold
and rainy-with snowstorms inter
spersing. There are approximate
ly four feet of snow back in the
woods while in the open where
the sun can shine the. ground is
bare. The road from Willamette
highway to Cascade Summit was
opened by a tractor hired by the
Southern Pacific company.
Among Cascade Summit resi
dents who have been away re
cently are Mr. and Mrs. Gene
Lavoy and daughters who spent
several days in Oakridge and Eu
gene. Mrs. Lavoy's mother lives
in Oakridge. Mr. and Mrs. Mar
vin Ugstad spent the weekend at
Portland visiting Mrs. Ugstad's
parents. Mrs. Abraham Galle
goes and daughter, Elaine, went
to Eugene to shop Monday.
Sergeant Russell Hills left for
Portland, after visiting his broth
er and sister-in-law here;
- Sergeant Benjamin E. Willis
writes that he is now in New
York. He expects to be sent into
the combat zone shortly. He is an
airplane mechanic. While here he
was assistant signal maintenance
man.

lived here for a year are think
ing of moving to Grants Pass
where Ugstad will work as water
service man for the Southern Pa
