Sport Notes
By FRED HAMPBON
Associated Press Staff Writer
So far the Portland Greyhound
racing people have been luckier
than Seattle's Longacres horse
race promoters.
They got permission from mil
itary and defense transportation
officials for a 80-day racing sea
son. -A proposed Longacres rac
ing meet remains doubtful.
Transportation is the crux of
the trouble at Longacres. The
track is several miles from Seat
tle, near Ronton. The Portland
greyhound business has no such
handicap, operating as it does in
Multnomah stadium, just a
stone's throw from mid-town.
Longacres spokesmen have
tried to convince the Washing
ton racing commission that Ren
top, now grown to a town of
around 25,000, would support
the track which would no longer
need Seattle trade. It seems,
however, that the defense trans
portation office is afraid Seattle
turf devouts might take a no
tion to waste their gasoline driv
ing out to play the ponies.
.
Quite a handful of former
Western International leaguers
are making their presence felt
in the Coast league, now that the
war has rubbed out the WIL and
created a stronger demand for
ivory in'' the double-A circuit.
San Diego got most of them.
Walter Lowe, hitting in the
high .300s for' San Diego, is a
former Spokane WIL man. His
timely hitting figured strongly
in the Padres' 5-2 series victory
over Portland last week. Port
land passed up Lowe a year ago.
Morry Abbott, erstwhile of Ta
coma, is a San Diego outfielder.
Jack Whipple, once with Yak
ima, is also a San Diegan. Char
lie Schanz, pitching graduate of
Tacoma, Yakima and Salem WTL
teams, has won three straight
for the Padres.
Charlie Peterson of Salem, an
outfielder in the WIL, has been
made over into a pretty good
third baseman by San Francisco.
Pete Jonas, five year veteran
with the WIL, is a starting pitch
er for Seattle.
