FIRE DINNER
Tickets have been placed on
tale at three places for Friday
night's Willard hotel dinner to
be addressed by Regional Forest
er Horace Andrews. The paste
boards may be obtained at the
chamber of commerce, ' Willard
hotel and Sunset grocery.
The dinner will be held as a
feature of Stop Forest Fires
week, being currently observed
through the efforts of a commit
tee headed by Walter Wiesen
danger. It is an American
Legion activity.
The public is invited to the
Friday evening dinner, Wiesen-
danger said, and urged early res
ervations. Regional Forester Andrews
will make his first visit to Klam
ath Falls this week since he took
over the position formerly held
by Lyle Watts. His talk at the
dinner will be on the topic,
"Forest Defense Is National De
fense." He will address a Klamath
Union high school group while in
town.
On his visit here, Andrews
will look over the forest serv
ice's Russian dandelion plantings
south of town.

It returned last night.
War broke in the Pacific as the
big plane neared New Zealand,
so its crew decided to continue
on around the world to New
York. There it was pressed into
the Atlantic service

CONTEST
SALEM, May 5 () Oregon
won second place in the 1942
pedestrian safety contest of the
American Automobile associa
tion, while nine Oregon cities
won high places in the city
pedestrian contests.
Salem won first place among
cities of 25,000-50,000 popula
tion. Klamath Falls and Astor
ia won honorable mention in the
same division.
Grants Pass tied for second
place among cities under 10,000
population, and McMinnville, St.
Helens, Springfield and Burns
won honorable mention in this
class.
Notification of the awards was
received by . the state depart'
ment today.
Governor Earl Snell, who, as
secretary of state last year con'
ducted the safety contest In Ore
gon, was given a special award.
Oregon has placed high for
the past four years, winning
honorable mention in 1930, sec
ond place in 1940, first place in
1941, and second In 1942.
Awards are based on improve
ment in the accident situation,
Oregon's pedestrian fatalities
having dropped from 109 in
1941 to 66 in 1942.

Five Klamath men entered
Angus cattle in the Pacific coast
Aberdeen-Angus sale at Gait,
Calif., ' Monday, and came
through with high honors,
bringing new recognition to
Klamath county's cattle In
dustry. A cow and calf exhibited by
G. D. and L. A. West brought
$725 after placing first In class.
Alvln and Charles Choyne's
14-months-old bull placed first In
Its class and sold $525.
Chct Barton sold a bull at the
sale and as a result of exhibiting
there a prospective buyer for 10
head of Barton's cows was ex
pected here this week.

Radcliffe of Pacific Terrace, re
ceived a certificate of merit
under biological science, at the
ninth annual Oregon Students
of Scionce conference hold at the
University of Oregon this past
week,
Delegates from Ltnfield, Ore
gon State, University of Oregon
and Pacific university, attended
the conference where 30 papers
were read on a wide range of
subjects on biological sciences.
Miss Radcliffe, Junior at OSC, is
majoring In botany.

rooms will close for the summer
on Jims S, it was decided at a
meeting of the Joint club com
mittee at the Salvation Army

summer.
