HAVE BANQUET
More than one hundred vol
unteer workers for the Scout
Camp Fire fund drive will be
guests of the Willard hotel this
evening at 6:30 p. m. at a din
ner meeting designed to launch
the 1943 campaign for funds to
support the work of the Boy
Scouts of America, the Girl
Scouts and the Camp Fire Girls.
John . Ebinger, campaign
chairman will preside at the
meeting assisted by Vcrn Owen,
general drive chairman, and
Mrs, Percy Murray, assistant
general drive chairman. This
year's drive for funds comes
at a time when all youth agen
cies are redoubling their efforts
to include mora youngsters in
their programs of character
building and citizenship train
ing in order to stem the rising
war time tide of juvenile de
linquency. All three agencies in
Klamath Falls are actively in
volved in war work of various
kinds and are steadily increas
ing in membership.

Donald Nelson Reports
Record Production Month

Record-breaking production to'
tals in aircraft, warships and
merchant vessels were rolled up
in March, Donald M.' Nelson re
ported today, but first-quarter
arms output still fell far short
of the rate needed to meet mili
tary plans for 1943.
Aircraft output soared to
6200 planes and heavy four-cn-gined
bombers topped the SOO-a-
month rate for the first time, the
war production board chairman
disclosed in his ninth monthly
production report.
Naval and cargo ship construc
tion was "the greatest on rec
ord," Nelson said, noting the
completion of the 45,000-ton bat
tleship Iowa in March and hint
ing, in these words, that more
are coming:
"It is expected that from now
on many of the larger warships
started early in the war effort
will be coming into active serv
ice." A report of increased produc
tion came also from Secretary
of the Navy Knox, who told his
press conference that the nation
has "arrived at the peak period"
of war production and that navy I
piano and ship output in April
set new records.
Combat aircraft delivered to
the navy, Knox said, "ran to
four figures for the first time.
Moreover the number of new
vessels of all classes except land'
ing craft completed by tho navy
during the first four months of
this year, the secretary said, was
equivalent "to a 25 per cent in
crease in the numerical strength
of the fleet and its auxiliaries,
over January 1 of this year,

Knox reported. He said that
merchant ship losses were down
considerably as compared with
March adding, "just why, and
how long that will continue I do
not know."
Overall munitions output in
March was 11 per cent above
February, although the daily
rate change was small because
February was three days short
er. Taking the first three months
together, howover, Nelson was
able to say:
"In the first quarter ot 1043
we produced almost 18,000 ar
tillery pieces, Including more
than 7000 anti-aircraft guns and
more than 8000 anti-tank guns.
Our factories also turned out
about 233,000 machtno guns and
more thuu 1,000,000 rifles and
sub-machine guns."
Nevertheless Nelson warned
that steel production Is noaring
its peak and that tho armament
goals cannot be mot unless the
production pace is accolcrated
80 por cent beyond the first
quarter records.
"Munitions output for the first
quarter of 1943 was only 18 per
cent of output scheduled for the
year," tho report said, "indicat
ing that ovorago quarterly out
put for the succeeding quarters
must averugo 87 per cent of pro-
gram, or half again as large as
in tho first quarter, to meet
schedules In accordance with
military plans."
