COAL LABOR
CRISIS LEAVES
STOCKS S
T
By VICTOR EUBANK
NEW YORK, May 1 () The
national coal labor crisis failed
to unsettle the stock market to
day and, as a matter of fact, lead
ing issues advanced fractions to
about 2 points, a number best
levels for the year or longer.
While some potential purchas
ers stood aside to await the pres
ident's broadcast tomorrow night
and further developments In the
fuel mining controversy, . there
was enough investment demand
for pivotals to give the list a gen
eral lift: TrendB were a shade un
even after a fairly good start:
Bids then began to appear and,
near the close, plus marks were
well in the majority. .
Transfers totaled 843,855
shares against 642,190 last Sat
urday. "It is perhaps a favorable
sign," one prominent Wall street
er suggested, "that Price Admin
istrator Brown should have
pledged additional steps to estab
lish a better balance between
payrolls and living costs by an
extension of price control to ev
ery important staple and the roll
ing back of all prices that have
gotten out of handj , . . .
This might indicate that the
administration is prepared to ex
ercise equal firmness about
wages.
