Formal - notification . of . the

Major General J. A. Ullo, is
given here:
"Your son was a passenger
on a ship which was attacked
shortly after midnight by an en

out warning. After the vessel
was struck every effort was
made to effect the rescue of those
who were aboard. Such efforts
were continued long beyond the
period of time that human life
could survive the elements In
the area.
"Following due and careful
consideration of all evidence and
circumstances surrounding the
sinking of the ship on which
your son was a passenger, an

been made. The war depart

in action on February 3, 1943.
"My deepest sympathy is ex

Notes
How to reduce crop damage
by wildlife, and particularly
pheasants, is described by Arthur
S. Einarscn, leader of the Ore
eon Cooperative Wildlife Re
search unit, in a new circular,
No. 148, Just Issued by the Ore
gon State college experiment sta
tion.
Einarsen points out that, while
the protection of crops and vic
tory gardens is unusually im
portant in this war year, so has
the importance of the wildlife
meat supply been increased for
the same reason. The present
pheasant "crop" in Oregon
would amount to three million
pounds of meat if "harvested,"
he shows.
From actual tests made of crop
damage by pheasants, Einarsen
recommends, where possible,
keeping particularly attractive
crops such as corn from 10 to 20
feet away from game bird cover.
This also applies to protection
from ground squirrels. The cir
cular also describes a method of
treating seed with a repellent
which has proved valuable in
instances of pheasant damage.
Einarsen comes to the defense
of the pheasants to a certain ex
tent by showing that a consider
able amount of damage blamed
on them is often caused by squir
rels or crows. Ho shows how to
detect the difference between the
two.
He also points out that actual
analysis of pheasants' stomachs
show that while they do somo
crop damage, they partially
make up for it in the large num
ber of insect pests, sijeh as wire
worms and 12-spotted cucumber
beetles, which they Include in
their diet.
An examination of 20 plant
ings from which crop damage
complaints had been received by
the research unit showed that
the distances of damage from
cover range from four to 20 feet.
On the basis of this evidence, a
planting of a border strip about
20 feet in width to a later ma
turing crop on those farms where
a choice is possible may be found
useful in reducing losses, Einar
sen points out.

What is known as the Red
Cross Pacific area comprises
seven states and Alaska; all but
one state and Alaska have com
pleted their war fund drive and
exceeded their quotas by com
fortable margins. Oregon led
these successful states with SI,-.
244,727, or 145 per cent of its
quota. Here in Klamath county
we went well over with 110 per
cent, which is a grand showing.
.As chairman of publicity, I
would much rather tell you
pleasant news like the above
than things that are not so
pleasant; however, I have to re
port facts to you. What is wor
rying us now is that we are far
behind on two work quotas; one
of them is the most important
of our immediate duties. We
need more workers every day
una every nour; wont you
please try to give at least six
flours a week to this great need?
Our other quota which is be
hind schedule is knitting; the
yarn for the navy knitting has
been here some time and has not
been taken out. This is work
you can do at home in the eve
nings or spare moments through
out the day and we would ap
preciate a special effort given
to tnis also.
But the surgical dressings are
most urgent. Thousands of our
men are fighting on every front:
when a man is wounded he must
have dressings. When you make
these you are savine lives: ner.
