in Fort Monroe, Va., going from

SALEM, March 30 (P) Four
measures that will save Oregon
taxpayers millions of dollars a
year In state and federal taxes
beginning with payments made
next year had the approval today
of Governor Earl Snell.
Ho signed the community
property bill today, which, by
enabling taxpayers to go on a
community property basis and
thus moke It possible lor hus
band end wife to file separate
returns, will save Oregon's more
wealthy taxpayers $0,000,000 a
yenr In federal Income taxes.
La to yesterday he signed the
three big state Income tax bills,
which will give state personal
and corporation Income taxpay
ers a 30 to 40 per cent tax cut
next year amounting to at least
$3,000,000. One of these bills
also gives school districts $5,000,
000 a year to reduce property
taxes.
Tho governor signed today the
bill to bring occupational dis
eases under the workmen's com
pensation law.

The new ambulance presented
to the Klamath platoon of the
Oregon Women's Ambulance
corps by the Elks lodge last
week, made its first call Monday
afternoon when It was used to
move home a patient recovering
from an appendectomy at a local
hospital.
Those in charge of the ambu
lance for Its initial run were
Lieut. Berdena Reedcr, Corp.
Mona Dixon, Privates Eva Long,
Lee Evans and Edna Culley.
The Klamath county court re
cently made a donation of two
litter stretchers to be used In the
new ambulance - which is sta
tioned at the city hall, through
tho courtesy of the city council,
where lt is available for welfare
and emergency calls, according
to Lieut. Reedcr.
Man Sentenced for
Blacking Eyes of
Ten-Year-Old Girl
SPOKANE, March 30 (P)
D. W. Stewart was sentenced to
30 days in Jnil yesterday, with
an additional five months sus
pended, for thrashing his daugh
ter so severely he blacked one of
her eyes.
Stewart told Justice of the
Peace Raymond F. Kelly he pun
ished the 10-year-old child for
telling her teacher Stewart had
said the teacher "was not fit to
be around human beings."
He pleaded guilty to a charge
of third degree assault.

April first was set as the
deadline by the fertilizer com
mittee for receiving applications
for the additional ammonium
phosphate (16-20) fertilizer
awarded this week by federal
authorities. All applications of
Klamath county potato growers
who have not yet secured their
fertilizer should be made to the
county agent's office, Federal
building, Klamath Falls, and all
applications of growers on Tule
lake should be made to the de
partment of agriculture office at
Tulclake. It is particularly Im
portant that this be completed
by Thursday night, April 1, as
the committee will meet Friday
night to work out plans for al
lotment to counties as requested
at the meeting held last week.
In Klamath county allocation
of fertilizer to Individuals will
be made through the Klamath
county farm machinery ration
ing committee. On Tulelake a
special committee has been ap
pointed for this purpose.
Algoma Employe
Dies Suddenly at
Home Saturday
William Emery Lloyd, 67, for
the past 27 years a resident of
Klamath county, died suddenly
at his home In Algoma Saturday
evening. Mr. Lloyd served for
the past six years as mill em
ploye and watchman for the Al
goma Lumber company.
Mr. Lloyd Is survived by his
wife, Lenora, of Algoma, five
sons and seven daughters. One
son. Pvt. Ralph A. Lloyd, is a
prisoner of war in the Philip
pines, and another son, PFC Wil
liam E. Lloyd Jr., is with the
US army in North Africa. Fun
eral services will be announced
by Whitlocks.

Sheepherders won't have to go
barefoot because of shoe ration
ing. The office of price administra
tion amended Its regulations to
day to allow persons whose oc
cupations require them to be
away from any available supply
for long periods to apply for ex
tra rations. Heretofore, persons
with two pairs of wearable shoes
were not eligible to apply.

An Interesting letter has been
received by Mrs. J, F, Prltchard
of the Keno highway from Sgt.
Max Hibbard, U. S. army air
corps, a Klamath Falls youth,
good friend of the Pritchard
boys. He is now somewhere In
New Guinea.
"Once again lt is letter writ
ing time so I guess I'll drop a
few lines over that way. As you
probably well know, it Is you
folks at home who occupy most
of our thoughts over here.
"As censorship rules are very
rigid, there is very little to
write about. We are not allowed
to write about weather or ter
rain, however, I'll try to tell
you as much about this country
as x can and hope it will pass.
"We are not far from the
equator, so it is plenty warm
most of the time. The seasons in
this part of the country are Just
opposite from home, but seasons
don't mean much here. The only
part that changes is the name.
We have many different kinds
of tropical fruit such as ba
nanas, cocoanuts, papayas, and
others. Also a few snakes, most
ly pythons. They sometimes
reach a length of 30 or 40 feet.
The largest one I have seen was
about 25 feet long.
"The kangaroo here differ
from those in Australia, being
smaller. They are the same in
every other respect. The cor
rect name for the midget kan
garoo is 'wallobie.' They are
